1000M is where the aphotic zone begins, thats where 100% of light is absorbed (60% of light is absorbed 1m below the surface and another 20% in the first 10m). Water, creatures, salt sediment all absorb light.

I think its far easier to dive AL doubles in that situation than to buy a D/S. When the water temps are in the mid 80's as they often get in parts of the world diving dry is not an option or not the best option.

There is a way to make 20ft your last stop depth, its under "config" at the top center. As far as combining your other stops, I dont think there would be a way to do that, I certainly dont think that would be a great idea either. You can also extend you stop at gas switches BTW.

WOW your instructor over reacted...to say the least. They are made by the same people who make the Dive Rite regs, but their second stage is not balanced. If your instructor is that mis informed as to not let you use it for your O/W class...you gotta wonder.
