Who to do IDC with on Ultila?

For my money, I would go back to Utila Dive Center myself in a heartbeat! Not only do they run a fantastic operation there, there is "after care" that is second to none by their course director and staff instructors. Every penny I spent there was worth it: while I can't speak for other...

    Live in Utila/Roatan?

When I lived on Utila, I shared a house with another candidate who was at the same shop (UDC), and while they didn't own the house, it seemed to stay within their hands simply by staff/candidates passing it from one to another. The house was across the street from the hotel UDC DID own - the...

Can only dive 50ft, is it worth it?

Absolutely it's worth it!!!! Tons to see at shallower than 50 feet, and as everyone says - more natural light! Less color loss, more dive time, etc and so forth. If you like taking pictures as I do, you'll LOVE the shallower depths for those reasons and more!! Quite often, I'd spent all time...

    Southern Ontario/ new Rec diver

Congratulations! Welcome to the sport and the site as well! Hope you enjoy every minute underwater, and continually upgrade your knowledge base as well as your gear!! I'm another Canuck who is stuck back in the Great White North for the moment, but I do NOT, unfortunately, share you passion...

wrist mounted dive computer or attached?

I'll throw my vote in for wrist mounted computer as well, for all those great reasons (safety being the top one ... you lose your AI computer, and you have NOTHING). Also, a wrist mounted computer works great for those of us who's eyesight may be changeable at this time in their lives ( a...

    Help with Fujifilm finepix f80

I have the 200 EXR with the same problem - with the built in diffuser on the underwater housing, it lowers the power output of the strobe and I was curious if it would be enough to fire a slave strobe. I had some problems with my older Reefmasters, so when I upgraded to a single, more powerful...

    Nitrox Specialty with PADI

The PADI Nitrox course is now an on-line course as well -- all you'd have to do at your LDS is analyze a couple tanks to show you know how to do it correctly. The rest is all theory now, and you can do it online whenever you choose to. Figure a half hour at most at your LDS to sign you off...

Grand Cayman - diving with our 13 yr. old - which dive shop?

That's the downfall to staying on the East End - so far from everything else, but that's also it's draw!!! Red Sail Sports is at Morritt's, and they do a great job in my opinion (no, I don't work there ... anymore!), but as you know, the diving on the east side can be tad more challenging some...

Dive Master Training in the Bay Islands or Caribbean

I would highly recommend Utila Dive Center in Honduras. Cheap lifestyle, good value, great people to work with and for, and - most importantly - a solid education at YOUR pace for your Dive Master. You will learn so much more there than your average course, and you will learn by DOING, not...

First trip to Cayman Islands and need some input

Wow - there are so many choices and plan designs you could choose from - depending on what time of year you come! I live and work on Grand Cayman (off island right now for medical treatment) and have lots of time to answer any questions you might have. I've worked for one company mentioned...

Only one dive destination in the Carribean?

A lot of it would depend on what ELSE you want to do with your time while there. If all you want to do is DIVE, DIVE, DIVE!, I'd suggest somewhere like Bonaire, where the diving is 24/7 and unlimited packages are available. If you want some nightlife, you want an island that has a life outside...

    MK10 squeals like a pig

Mine does it all the time when there isn't enough grease packed in during service ... seems to want much MORE than what the specs say. Once the techs pack it in it's usually fine. Been doing it for 5 years now, and never a problem breathing - just whistles away when it's dry in there.

Belize / Honduras / Grand Cayman choice, looking for advice

Hi Ash! Thanks for asking for opinions - that's always a great way to get a cross section of what's out there. I meet a lot of people from cruise ships, and most don't have much idea what's going on for diving at any of the ports they visit. I'd like to comment a moment on your thread, and...

Only have time for 1 more dive...Kittiwake or night dive?

If it were me, I'd night dive. The Kittiwake is an interesting dive if you've never been on a wreck, but it's still very new and not overly populated with fish life. Having said that, there IS life there, and you never know what will come cruising through (think eagle rays). For my money...

    Regulator "whistling"

I had a similar problem after having my SP Mark 10 serviced - turns out there was not enough grease in the first stage. Might be the same for you, but I'm not sure. Just a thought.

    VEO 180 ALT problem

Thanks. Yeah, I've left it out for a couple days, and that's when I took it for a dive and had the result. I've a feeling the pressure sensor is shot, but I wondered if it might be some software issue that might be resolvable some other way. Trying to be optimistic, but.... :) Thanks again...

    VEO 180 ALT problem

Hi - my Veo 180 has decided 30 feet below is the new sea level... is there any way I can reset this? I've had it for 2 years now, and bought it second hand so there is no warranty, but I've always liked the computer. But it now just flashes "ALT" at the surface: it came to life around 30 feet...
