djensen - post over on the So California Forum your dates, and ask for help. I bet you get a few people who will offer to buddy up and join you. They can also give you info on the hotel in Avalon (Catalina) that most of them use, as well as maybe some group boat trips you could join. That is how we arranged our first trip out... people were helpful and even met up with us for our first 2 days of boat diving!

It is definitely different from the Caribbean... and as I said, the best time to go is AUG, IMHO.

djensen - here in Orange County there are several dive clubs that dive every week that you could tag along with if you want to shore dive. It would also be a good opportunity to dive with someone experienced in our local waters.

For boat diving, just hookup with a dive shop and sign up for their charter. Finding a buddy onboard (or a group of two you could tag along with) wont be hard. Same goes for Catalina. Take the Express over and find a buddy at Casino Point.

Thanks, everybody, for the great suggestions. I researched each one and the trip I've chosen works well for a solo traveller. I just booked a live-aboard trip in the Eastern Caribbean for a week. Again, thanks for your suggestions!

You are cordially invited to come see us here in St.Vincent. Warm waters BELOW THE HURRICANE BELT! Many have mentioned places that notoriously are in harms way during the month of August. We sit below the hurricane belt and above the intercontinental convergence zone. As weather comes through it generally pulls all the energy away from us, leaving us unusually calm still winds and seas of glass with visibility that many have spoke about for many years. The Grenadines have long been held exclusively for the rich and famous & now you can share in those exact same beautiful islands and reefs for pennies on the dollar with us. St.Vincent hasn't been "found" & the exchange rate is in your favor almost 3-1. From Canada you can fly direct to Barbados & then it's only a 40 minute hop flight to St.Vincent. find our website and you'll find lots more information on St.Vincent and our thriving reefs. LOTS of reasons why St.Vincent there. Hope to see you here soon.
