I have my light tied to a bolt snap using some of the leftover from my DSMB spool. However the line is quite slippery and it is prone to coming undone. I've superglued the knot and melted the ends so it holds but it's not ideal. Does anyone have a recommendation for what I could use that will not come undone so easily?

Thanks!

How are you tying it? There's a specific way to tie bolt snaps to things using cave line, and if you do it right they shouldn't come undone even without superglue (I just trim and burn the ends). There's some good videos on Youtube you can check out.

No super glue for me, either. This is a good overview video, although he does tie the final knot wrong. Use a proper square/reef knot (reversing the direction in the second step, e.g., left over right, then right over left), not the granny knot version depicted.

I've found sometimes the line that comes with cheap spools unravels even when the ends are melted. Instead of a reef knot I use a double reef knot - basically a reef knot tied with surgeons knots. If it's something heavy or expensive, I'll wrap the line around one more time and tie a second double reef knot. Like belt and suspenders.

You have braided nylon line.

Try this video for the knot. When I follow his directions, the knots don't fail. When I try it from memory, not so good :-)

While I admire advanced knottery, I'm lazy so just use a small zip tie ('cable tie' to you folk) or these bungie loop thingies to attach clips to lights:

Should I somehow manage to clip myself to an underwater obstacle, then both zip ties and these bungee loops will break if given a large amount of force...

I shall now sit back and wait for the first post to tell me I'm going to die.

Cheers
Rohan.

Zip ties become brittle over time and can break easily and without much warning.

I've been using cave line and the knots shown above, locked in with a few drops of super glue. In close to 20 years of doing this, I've NEVER had one break or come loose. I have to cut it if I ever want to remove the bolt snap.
