Wife does not dive. I'm pretty much on my own.

I really appreciate the non-judgmental feedback I'm getting. It's been very helpful.
You go diving and she is gone massage/shopping/sun worshipping etc with your plastic!!
Majority of tourists visiting eg. Bali and Phuket are not interested in scuba diving.

I recommend finding a cheap second hand one to get started with. You can find some at less than 100 GBP here.

If you decide to upgrade, you can resell it at the same price you bought or nearly …
I did buy an even cheaper Cressi Leonardo for me and my wife. Less than 100 eur new on Amazon Prime Day.
Quite conservative compared to more advanced ones, which for me is good.

I doubt Mares is much different in terms of conservatism, but it does have a USB uplink instead of Leo's IR. Which these days is a plus if you want to keep your dive logs without resorting to calligraphy on dead trees.

So are you one of those folks who insist that something is false until it has been proven to be true?

No, I just don't assume something is true because a handful of people believe it. Especially when reliable studies have been done on the subject and have found it to be nothing more than conjecture.

Someone "feels good" after using Nitrox so they naturally think there's a scientific basis to it. There's a reason why scientific and medical studies don't rely on a person's "feelings" about something and use clinical facts, figures and demographics using large numbers of people to eliminate the subjective responses that completely obliterate any sort of logical and accurate gathering of facts.

Hmmm... what did divers do before dive computers?

I actually see quite a few divers on cruise W/O them.
They used these:

People learned them forwards and backwards, it was part of standard OW training.
All you needed was a depth gauge and a timing device and the tables memorized and you went diving.
What gear configuration do you have, or do you rent?

Tables.
More than 30 years ago since I or anyone else I know used tables.

This theory has been thoroughly debunked.
I cannot say I agree with this myself, I certainly feel less tired after diving on Nitrox, especially over 24 metres. Most people I dive with also think this. Personally I cannot see how anyone can disprove this claim, it is highly objective.

Mmm well .....

But this article says it could be due to reducing the sub clinical DCS symptoms :)

Actually she does snorkel. We often look for dive ops that allow bubble watchers. On a December '22 cruise to the ABCs they let her come along and snorkel while I shore dived in Bonaire and Curacao.

When we were just in Roatan she was on the dive boat and snorkeled while I dived. She said it was the best snorkeling she ever done in her 40+ years of snorkeling.
I first took her snorkeling on our honeymoon cruise in 1979.
