Some are kept, some are released alive. Depends on the reason for the cruise.
There are also targeted studies farmed out to commercial fishermen where the catch is kept and sold to determine CPUE which is the rwte at which that specific catch is caught at and that helps to determine allowable catch

Despite personal philosophy, assuming the fishing activity was legal, Mr. Moore and Mr. Mansell had no right to interfere with the activity. The potential punishment seems quite harsh.

I remember when this happened....People on the boat were posting pictures bragging they were saving animals and expecting a heap of praise. But when many replied it was illegal (and back at the dock) they called FWC (after) hoping for forgiveness. The boat is still running, we see them on the water.

The potential punishment is lax compared to what would have happened if they'd been caught in the act by the fishermen.
Not to mention it's not just the interference with legal fishing but also grand theft, interference with law enforcement and destruction of evidence.

Interfering with fishermen or hunters going about thier business legally doesn't generally end well. And in Florida it is particularly stupid. Hope these guys get some time.
Shark longlining is pretty selective and is used by fisheries managers at NOAA to assess populations.
What are the sharks used for?

Killing sharks for money is how populations are assessed?

Seems goofy

Well US fisheries seem to be in better shape than 90% of the developed world so....

Sharks are way overdue here for some form of management other than the typical social and legacy media parrot bashing that all sharks should be protected. Guys won't even dive the middle grounds in the summer anymore it's so bad out there. You don't even need to be fishing.
