If you're just going to buy a reg and dive it, either servicing yourself or getting a shop to do it, brand has almost no meaning. If DIY is your hobby, that's when things get interesting, I mean costly.

I am glad that I never ventured out from Apeks!
No up-grading(except the 5th port on some models) or even special tool required!

I don't think the G250/G200 "upgrade" is so different from "upgrading" a 40 series Apeks to a 50. Now that is one very pricey upgrade, I know, I've done it. Or sealing a US4 for that matter.

There is NOT much of a up-grading from changing the adjusting screw from requiring a allen key to manually adjusted. Still breath the same.
As for the service kit! Not that bad in HK if you have the right contact. OEM works as well.
For the spare parts then this is different story. I don't think I will bother to turn US4 to DS4, the cost for those parts is ridiculous.

Hobby cost MONEY! Big time. The only limiting factor is your own bank balance.
But a routine service of a scuba reg is completely different.

There is a guy in the UK somewhere that sells a home made adjuster knob on ebay for $12-15. I have bought several over the years. If you search apeks adjuster, he usually has one listed.

Looking at the two balance chambers in this post above: two balance chambers
I am struck not by the extra length of the narrow sleeve (that's a good thing), but by the apparent extra height of the base. I wonder if this will affect minimum cracking effort in a G250, because there is a limit to how far you can screw out the adjustment knob. I seem to recall being frustrated by an old G250 that I just couldn't get low enough. But I can't recall which balance chamber it had...
Longer base = .398”, overall length .750”, short base = .374”, overall length .555”
