Choice #1 was meant to cover that

Yeah, but "Short hose primary reg and short hose backup reg" really doesn't cover my set-ups . . .

40" primary under arm (to FFM) and normal length secondary, which is typically longer than your avg short hose primary. Still haven't done it yet but my secondary is meant to have a QD between the hose and the 2nd stage just as my primary does. When diving my ffm, I also carry a spare 2nd stage in case I have to bail out of the ffm. This way I still have another reg to donate to an OOA diver.

for recreational diving.....im a fan of the traditional short hose primary/ slightly longer hose octo.

for a few reasons.

  1. thats what the majority of recreational divers are used to....its a familiar setup to everyone you will be diving with.
  2. it doesnt require any action on my part.....unlike long hose primary donate, someone can swim up behind me and grab my octo, and i dont need to do a thing.
  3. i dont have to take the reg out of my mouth...if you end up with a panicked diver, i feel im better able to assist them if I dont have to worry about breathing as well
now for Tech divers.....long hose primary donate makes sense......they are dealing with different breathing gasses, they are less likely to deal with a panicky diver....and they typically go into places where a long dangling octo is a liability.....but i really dont see much benefit for rec situations.
