TULINGAN INVASION' IN ROMBLON AND 'FISH KILLS' IN ORIENTAL MINDORO - 'NO BIG DEAL,' says BFAR Mimaropa.

In the morning of January 17, 2020, in Bgy. Sawang, Romblon, Romblon, schools of tulingan (a species of tuna) were caught by local fishermen in their nets a few meters away from the coastlines. The locals said they took the opportunity of capturing the 'kawan' of tulingan before they reach the beach of Bgy. Sawang. 'This is the first time that tulingan invade our beaches,' one fisherfolk says. They helped themselves for the good catch and some sold the free tulingan for only P120 a kilo.

Just a few days before on January 15, fish kills were reported in coastal Bgy. Lumangbayan, in San Teodoro, Oriental Mindoro.

In both those unexpected sea incidents in Romblon and Oriental Mindoro, ranking officials of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) just shrugged off reports that the the two sea incidents were related to Taal Volcano eruption from nearby Batangas province.

Without conducting an in-depth investigation, a high ranking BFAR official upon seeing the fishes spread on the beach says, without batting an eyelash - 'it's but natural for fishes to beach on the shorelines.'

How much does the volcanic activity raise the nearby water temperature in the lake, I wonder.

Good question, at this point I don't think such data is publicly available, but I'll keep an eye out for it.

But in a water quality report published in 2016, the water surface temp was between 26° to 31°c during Aug 2013 and May 2014 time frame. So this at least gives us a baseline to compare if I can find current data.

I will give a Sit-Rep in a little while, but I don't expect it to change much from my earlier update.

Thank you. I know Fukushima raised the nearby ocean temps so I could only imagine this would do the same.

Latest picture.

“We have this perception now that it’s waning versus underground sub-surface activity, which indicates otherwise,” Solidum said at a news conference, adding that experts “have not seen a definite trend that it’s weakening.”

Oh beautiful picture, thx for posting Bluering :)

“We have this perception now that it’s waning versus underground sub-surface activity, which indicates otherwise,” Solidum said at a news conference, adding that experts “have not seen a definite trend that it’s weakening.”

Just to be clear about this statement, he is saying that just because all appears to be returning to "normal" on the surface, does NOT mean that below the ground is returning to normal. Underground activity indicates that things below are anything BUT normal, and chances of an event have not reduced.

Which actually sort of summarizes my update:

Pretty much same as previous update posted on page 5. Earthquake swarms continue, much less stream venting, but likely do to lack of water. 14km Danger zone and evac still enforced. Tagaytay some businesses were open today.

Taal remains at Alert Level 4

While it's current status would not effect my travel plans. It's future status might. Fingers crossed. I care more for the people there than my own dive trip....

President Duterte has provided disaster relief to the many thousands who have been evacuated and resettled permanently from the volcanic danger zone....

That lake is almost completely gone. The theory is that fissures opened up and drained the water. Where the water is meeting magma flow is creating a lot of activity at depth. They also state a lot of the water may have been blown away by the eruption itself.
Taal volcano’s crater lake is nearly empty

I arrived in Manila from Cebu late on Saturday night. On Sunday life seemed pretty much back to normal in Manila. Buses were running to Batangas so there seemed to be no impediment to reaching Puerto Galera for anyone traveling there. Bauan and Anilao where I spent the last week of December before heading to the Visaya's on the 1st are outside the danger zone. I flew out on Sunday night arriving back on Guam early Monday morning local time.
