The bulky gauges aren’t as useful as they’re big, cumbersome, fail quicker due to corrosion

You do talk some utter rubbish sometimes. I'd love you to provide some statistics.

My anecdotal evidence - diving somewhere that has extreme heat and humidity and higher than normal salinity is that consoles doesn't corrode any faster than brass and glass - so loved by the GUE crowd. None of my consoles have failed. Nor my wife's Nor anyone of my regular dive group who all log more than 100 dives per year

In fact none of my SPG's have corroded - I generally use ones encased in rubber. The only brass n glass I have are on my SM rig

More anecdotal evidence. Normal rubber mounted spg's stand up more to the bashing about against rocks in the high current dives we like here .

Each one of my spgs has got more dives than you and they're still going strong

I suggest you change your brand of Kool aid

I think my newest console/set of gauges is about 30 years old and most have seen thousands of dives. All are in very good condition except one ScubaPro depth gauge which does show signs of corrosion around the front trim. I am guilty of rinsing my gear in fresh water and drying it out of the sun so maybe that's a factor. I thought perhaps Diving Dubai was referring to some other gauges/consoles that I am not familiar with (just about anything newer than 30-years-old  )

I can understand why someone would want only a SPG on their hose, but where to you put the depth gauge? Putting stuff on my wrist just takes longer to get ready to dive plus I might forget something and have to go back and get it. Lots of people seem to like their computer on their wrist but it seems like the same people say you need backup because computers aren't reliable so, where do you put the depth gauge if not on the console?

You look after your gear obviously bettter than most people. One of the easiest thing to fail in a divers equipment is the o-ring in the spg.

Please don’t talk about GUE they’re irrelevant. These are my own personal opinions, not GUE and I don’t think I even plan to do another course with them because of money issues at the moment.

Thus is what the LDS said.

Did they? I have one but it doesn’t have it? It’s a few years old. You could be right, if you are I would definitely get one as a backup.

Not sure. Too lazy to go look it up. :) I just thought I remembered that lack of Gauge mode was the one big knock against that computer, as it made it useless as a backup if you ever go tech. Then I thought they came out with the Zoop Novo or something like that and that was one of the main new features.

But, I could be totally wrong.

I also think it's totally irrelevant. At least, to me. For tech diving, I will always (try to) use a second tech computer as a backup to my primary. A cheap computer in Gauge mode would mean I'd have to fall back to following a written out plan and not having any tissue tracking in my computer that would then be used on subsequent dives (the same day or the next day). I'm capable of planning a dive and then following a written plan using a computer in Gauge mode. I just choose not to. :-D

Thanks for the comment, however I’m sure it’s not true. Lots here that their kit like the Crown Jewels

Each month my gear lays on a boat deck for 3 days, eating bumped about and handled roughly by the boat crew. The summer heat is plus 40c in the shade, it will be in the sun. It won’t get cleaned fun till I get home. If it’s my teaching gear it might see a quick splash with a hose until I’ve finished - it could be a week

Then it all gets dropped in a water tank at home, maybe overnight, or a couple of days if I’m not around. After that it gets hung to dry, yes in the shade but it’s still subjected to the heat. Again it might be a day or a couple before it goes into my store - between 25-30c

My point is that gear is quite resilient, I don’t mistreat my gear, but it doesn’t get worked hard.

With regard. To your comment about the o rings in the SPG (HP Spool) out of our 8 regs live replaced 2 in 5 years. You’ll get a fine stream of bubbles as they start to wear

Finally pretty much all Spg’s are made in the same factory in Italy, the outer cases might be different as will the faceplates but the rest is all the same

Your LDS seems to over exaggerate things,...

Let's see...

Overpaid on my first basic mask/snorkel/fins/boots set, though not really a regret. They have served me well.

Bought an integrated mask/dive computer on sale for my first DC. Wonderful concept, but the mask! It was this awful high-volume thing that was like trying to dive with horse blinders on. Fortunately I realized it was a no-go before I used it for real so I was able to return it. Crisis averted, lesson learned.

Bought expensive dive boots during basic scuba because my package pair were constantly unzipping. Seemed okay in the shop, but had to ditch them after 5 minutes in the pool because they were pinching my feet. Couldn't return them, still have them. Waste of $60.

BFK, but hey it looks cool. $30, used it for basic scuba and never since.

$10 neoprene holder for said BFK.

After basic scuba I got a bunch of cheap junk for diving and then didn't dive for seven years. When I did, I replaced all of it with actual good stuff.
Titanium squeeze knife, $30.
3-piece light set, $50. Only the strobe still works, and the other stuff was junk after LED dive lights became mainstream.
Mares mushroom smb with open bottom, $30. Just was outdated by the time I was ready to use it.

Not securing my flag to my float with 5 cents of string has cost me, idk, $20-$30 in replacing dive flags. Some lessons don't stick the first time I guess.

AOW training, $200. I mean, you have to do it to get to the other stuff, but mostly what I learned was not to fork over money for what I could teach myself. This has lead to fewer classes but they have been actually useful. Kind of like paying a confidence man for a lesson on how swindling works, though this was inadvertent.

I have the advantage of owning not one but two wrists and equip accordingly. That being said, different strokes for different folks.

They’re also at least 40€ more.

Why do all the really experienced/technical divers have brass and glass then? Who needs a boot anyway? They do nothing.
