Evening all

I dived a bit in the past and am coming back to it after a 20 year break. I am putting my gear together from the used market as I'm on a budget and already have a good opinion on what i want from my gear.

I have been lurking around and have been reading about the rise of DIR and Hogarthian set ups which are new since I was last diving. Now i understand this seems to be a very divisive topic so I dont want to get into that but if there are aspects of these approaches that I would like to incorporate into my gear should I expect issues with my certifying agency?

I am getting my re-cert with PADI as they I have been told they have the best instructors in my new area and I know they advocate a particular stadard setup. I will use rental gear till i get my OW as its included but if I was to dive with my LDS on trips or local dives is non standard setup considered a problem?

Any advice, experiences or even internet wisdom :) gratefully received.

Why don't you finish your recert and then start gathering your Hogarthian setup. Don't rush into gathering equipment.

I think this is something that is more going to depend on instructor and dive shop. I did my OW in a BP/W. One of the instructors dives that himself and the shop sells a lot of them. It wasn’t a problem.

The crotch strap did add complexity to the BC remove and replace in the pool. I just practiced at home for half hour that morning doing belt by feel so crotch strap wouldn’t be a problem in the pool. And it wasn’t.

I'm not intending to go full hogarthian lol, at least not just yet, but I do know that I won't dive PADI standard setup as all my previous training was on primary donate.

I have a buddy in class now. His instructor was happy he using a bp & wing but asked that he used standard recreational length hoses for class. Makes sense.

As far diving after certified. You shouldn't receive any grief for using Hogarthian setup locally or elsewhere.

I don’t believe there is such a thing as a PADI standard setup. There is a gear list in the instructor manual but it is very generic. “Buoyancy control device (BCD) with tank mount or separate backpack, and low pressure inflator”

Jacket style, back inflate, backplate are all accepted by the several shops I see teaching at the local beginner sites.

I'm not so much referring to gear as setup. PADI standard is octopus and in an OOA you give or your buddy takes the octo. I originally qualified in the days before octos were commonplace and did all my training and diving on the principal of donating your primary. The logic of that still seems valid to me and is the way GUE/DIR/Hogarth support so I would prefer to run my gear that way.

No, there is no PADI standard setup. There may be an instructor or shop standard that they may call a PADI standard to discourage pushback.

There are a couple ways people do their gear setup. My advice is to take the class first and make a few dives after using rental gear to see what others are doing and what makes sense for you.

Since you mentioned interest GUE style gear, you may want to consider taking the class with a GUE instructor. GUE offers recreational basic open water training and the classes are very good.

I looked but there doesn't seem to be a guest instructor in my neck of the woods. I looked at TDI/SDI BN but after asking g around d I was trying there was only one local instructor and he wasn't up to much. So I decided to go with the instructor that most people suggested.
