I think the reaction from this thread, (members contacting dive shops with questions about solo diving policies), has elevated the dive shops awareness to the issue and will result in closer scrutiny and perhaps less willingness to not inquire more about solo diving.

I understand dive shops wanting to limit liability. I also wonder how prevalent lawsuits are when divers get hurt/killed? Does anyone have any hard data on lawsuits?

I . I see their response and policy as no different for solo than it would be for any other specific inquiry ie can I rent tanks from you if I am not certified, can I rent nitrox if I am not nitrox certified etc. I don't see why this would cause any diver from not using DFB.

The difference is the requirements for certification to dive and for ean cert for nitrox are both found on their website. The requirements for solo diving is not on their website.

Moderators, can you kill this thread, please, before another dozen of morons calls Bonaire? Thank you.

Interesting discussion about the philisophical intersection of diving, freedom, self-preservation, common sense and others making rules about our behavior imposing their "wisdom" on our behalf when we know not what we do.

One reason this solo diver cert policy is wrong, IMHO, is that it is being imposed by an organization with a direct financial interest in the certification process.

I have a friend who is pushing 5000 dives, lives on Bonaire and has been doing solo fish id and lion fish hunting for years. She is not solo certified, but she dives conscientiously, safely and well within her knowledge limits and abilities. I have another friend in his 60's who has been diving since he was 13 and thinks nothing (wrong phraseology; actually very thoughtful and careful) of going to 250 ft on air by himself, but he is not certified in solo or tech diving. He knows how to do those things because he learned when doing them with others who already knew. Enforcing a solo diver cert for these folks is inappropriate, IMHO.

To me, the solo cert is much the same as AOW cert. Neither is necessary for safe diving, but can provide additional education helpful to the accomplishment of different types of diving. Those other types of diving can be learned by means alternative to a formal course. This should be allowed, IMHO. Most important, however, is that neither PADI nor NAUI nor any other dive organization should be able to set requirements for what diver can or cannot do. Guidance is one thing, an enforced rule is another. And frankly, I'd be more accepting of a local dive op setting requirements than a large business that is creating a new income stream for itself.

I dived solo for many years with operators who knew me. I finally got solo certified in 2013 so that I could easily dive with operators who did not know me, but allowed solo diving with certification. This strategy has been 100% successful. You may not like it but some operators require AOW for some dives and may require solo cert for solo dives. Either get used to it or dive only under circumstances where nobody cares, your choice.

Tarponchik, maybe you should wait until you get a few more years under your belt diving before you start calling out others who have been diving a lot longer than you have. Seeking out correct and accurate information is not moronic. A store's policy is not going to change simply because potential customers make inquiry concerning the policy. The policy came first, not the inquires.

So just because you wasted your money on these rip-off classes you want everyone else to fall into the same pit? Unbelievable.

Should divers not ask about dive op policies that are not clearly stated on their websites?
