The tank maneuver that Tobin mentioned used to be the way we taught students how to put their tanks on underwater after the ditch and don. It eliminated hose entanglement if you were taught the right way. When you did the maneuver out of the water you had to make sure you could pick up that tank and all the other stuff on it. It was called "John Wayening" your tank. Mike Nelson used to do it on " Sea Hunt" with twin tanks (Voits). I was told by a knowledgeable source that the tanks used in the filming of his tank maneuver were made out of wood.
I have seen plastic buckles, weight pouch buckles, weight belt buckles break. I have also seen stainless steel weight belt buckle get absolutely useless when weights were dropped on them. Failure point is just that, what would you trust your life on if you were hanging on it with you dear life, a plastic fixture or a stainless steel fixture. Now I know there are really good composite materials out there, but they are not being used for shoulder buckles, weight pouch buckles and etc for a BCD.
When selling a BCD, I equate the standard jacket or ADV style BCD as an automatic transmission on a car. The BP/wing is a manual transmission. You have to be taught how to use it and it takes practice to master it.
My wife and I have replaced the webbing on out back plates once in 15 years, and that was due to no maintenance from teaching in chlorinated pools. Everything else except for patches on the wing, are the same for me (single tank wing/ STA). Before that, I used to grab a new BCD every 2 years (used to own a store) because they got ratty after being in the pool all the time. I saved a lot of money by learning to use a BP/wing. So 9 years ago I got a Kydex BP and a wing for my daughter. It was her first BC. She now uses a SS BP/wing.
