It would seem odd that there was no word of this on BA_Diving or the council. But then again most of us got news of these things thru Chuck. Let me know what you find out Greg, I'm with you on this.

This is a state park. How are rates determined? Which fees are mandated at the state level and which, if any, are mandated at the park level?

I would imagine there must be written procedures for raising rates and I would have to wonder if they were followed.

A 100% rate hike does not seem justified.

$20 per diver? What a bunch of bull$hit! I'm going to start researching formal methods of appeal/protest.

Pretty easy to appeal/protest don't go! There are so many other good dive sites in the area that are free so why pay? If enough people stop going they will find out that by increasing the fee by 100% did not increase thier revenue by 100% but may have decreased it oh wait scratch that we're talking about our government they won't get it they'll just increase it again! Just go dive somewhere elase.

Why don't they open up all the parks they shut down first?
It's kind of ironic, the state parks are supposed to belong to you and me, the people.
Here we have an government overseer that has pretty much privitized public lands and now decides how much they are going to charge us to go onto what is supposed to be ours.
And to top it off, we entrust these lands to their care and pay them to do so with our taxes, then they decide they need the funds for something else so they close the parks and tell us we can't go on them now, or in the case of Lobos, jack up the rates through the sky just because they can.
And they look at us like dirtbags, somehow it's our fault now for not paying enough taxes for them to allow us to go onto Their lands.
It's not my fault they spent all their money plus money they don't even have on stupid programs and now they're flat broke.
Why don't you guys with boats come in from the ocean and dive there anyway? Dive right on the edge of the park just to piss them off, not a damn thing they could do about it.

That's pretty much how it works, huh? No matter whether they can handle it or not, they must be involved. If it goes poorly, they weren't involved deeply enough. At least they referee our personal conflicts for us. That must be a valuable service.

I'm not sure how much diving there is just outside the park, except closer towards Monastery. It would be nice if you could do Bluefish from the ocean side. I wonder what they could actually do, practically speaking. Does the park have a patrol boat?

I don't know if they have a patrol boat or not, probably not, unless maybe they get fish and game involved. Of course they could call the Coast Guard and call it some sort of domestic terrorism, that would be the only way the CG would get involved since they are part of Homeland security now. Once they actually found out why they were called I think they would be a little chafed.
I don't really see how they could stop someone from anchoring right on the edge of the park and diving underwater in and back out of the park, as long as you didn't surface in the park it would be hard for them to prove.
It would be interesting to see just how far they would be willing to escalate it.
The reason I've never dove there is because I don't believe in their little totalitarianist rules about buddy teams, no solo, getting chewed out for surfacing alone, etc. I've heard about the little tyrant dictator that works there too, we wouldn't get along AT ALL.
Some may think it's great, I think it's a total violation of our freedoms. Who the hell are they to tell me what I can and can't do on property that is supposedly public, I am the public!

I sure miss the $4 diver fee for diving Lobos. Was not that long ago..

Does the park have a patrol boat?

Yes, it is a rescue boat that lives in the Whaler's Cove parking lot. It would be very easy to ID any boats and I'm sure there are legal penalties. If there weren't boats would already be encroaching into the park.

Personally I don't see this as a revenue issue. Even if they have full reservations at 15 teams a day (which they only have on weekends) that is only an extra $300/day. In the whole scheme of things that is peanuts for the Park Service.

Do I like it anymore than anyone else so far. Not at all. Will I boycott Pt. Lobos as a result? Probably not. An extra $10 once or even twice a month to dive there isn't going to break my bank.
