As much time as is spent in the Open Water class teaching the various entry procedures, I kind of assumed that it mattered how one entered the water.

From the posts in this thread, it sounds like it doesn't matter at all how you enter, as long as you don't lose your mask and the regulator doesn't come out of your mouth in the process.

Please note the previous 32 posts. The OP was just asking how YOU enter the water, just a fun thread.

You misinterpret my post. I was asking whether how one entered the water mattered. As a matter of curiosity.

But hey, never pass up an opportunity to insult a fellow scubaboard member, right?

Knock it off.

So how DO you enter the water?

Simple question, do you mind answering?

From a boat I really have no preference. My FAVOURITE way is walking 10 feet from my car on a flat sandy beach.

Usually the giant stride. I do however like the NesTea plunge though, just for fun.

Well, Matt, sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't! When I teach OW, I tell students what sorts of entries make sense with what sorts of conditions. For example, the controlled seated entry is good if you're at a place with a lot of rocks right under the entry point, like a dock or a pier or a lava shelf on the big island of Hawaii; a backward roll is what you need when you're in a RIB (no way to do a giant stride from one of those!); if you're diving from shore, well, there's only one way to get in.... so it does matter to a certain extent. In my experience, there's a lot that can be done with a giant stride, and that's where the "creativity" comes in, and it doesn't matter so much as long as you get in and keep your mask and air where they belong. Here in Thailand, the backpacker places like to teach OW students the "James Bond entry".

As for me, I like the no-frills giant stride personally.
