Why run away from something that is a great resource for learning just because of a couple of habitual flamers? You are going to find those "less than helpful people" anywhere, in any forum, and in any aspect of life. Your own self-assurance and confidence are the best antidotes to obnoxious and rude people. As others have said, use the good stuff and ignore the crap.

I think the big problem with this sort of advice is that "self-assurance and confidence" may be present even if they are not earned. Most of the time when someone replies to a post claiming something is a bad idea or dangerous, it is because it is. It is still possible that a person, such as the OP, be so confident (and I am just using the OP as an example because it is his thread....I am NOT saying this is the case) in their non-existent skills and abilities that they ignore what is very good and solid advice. If someone is just being an ass then yeah....ignore them. If someone is giving you advice that you dislike or don't agree with, do not ignore them. Watch to see if there is a trend to agree with them. If there is, then it is likely sound advice that you just don't like because it goes against what you want.

After reading the thread in question, I have to shrug a little. No matter where you get into a conversation, whether it's on line or in somebody's dining room, you're likely to run into people who don't agree with you. If the opposing position is stated politely and with its reasons, most of us have learned either to debate the reasons or let it go. Some people just can't deal with differences of opinion anywhere, whether it's here or in real life social situations. It's best to avoid circumstances which are likely to produce discussion, if you don't like discussions, or if you are likely to take any unshared viewpoints as personally offensive.

I looked at a few of the apparently related threads and did not see any ashes from the "flames". But then I also realize that there may have been some posts removed by MODs so it may be hard to tell what really occurred.

I do not agree with you. Our views are opposing and I can not deal with our difference in opinion. In an effort to avoid this uncomfortable position again, I ask that you leave Scubaboard.

:)

If that happens, we will make you go bring her back.

Ideas are put out there to be tested and thus confirmed or rejected. Where it not for people who are willing to take the time and energy to provide opposing views we'd all be walking about with far more BS in our brains that we currently enjoy.

Having diligently cultivated a thick skin, I refuse to leave. I will not take offense at posts from a fellow cave diver, anyway . . . :)

Dang it. I just wanted a chance to come get you so we could hit Ginnie on the way back to the board! LOL..
