hello I just purchased two new sets of 1st & 2nd stage hog regs cold water and they seem very nice. I did not receive any registration cards or manuals of any kind with them. I know they have limited lifetime warranty but how do you know when I bought them or that they were new to me not second hand?
also would like to know what I am doing with knob and lever nothing with regs and nothing on line? thanks.

I am assuming that your question is about the knob and lever on the second stage.

The knob adjusts cracking pressure. It adjusts how hard you have to suck to get the reg to start to deliver gas. Common sense would denote that you'd want it set as sensitive as possible (all the way loose - counterclockwise), but then it will freeflow very easily. Tighten the knob up some (clockwise) to tighten the cracking pressure and keep it from freeflowing too easily. Most people have their primary set pretty sensitive and their backup ("octopus" on a standard recreational rig) pretty tight so it tends not to freeflow so easily.

The lever changes the backpressure inside the reg, controlling how the reg delivers air to you. With little backpressure (lever away from your lips), the reg will feel like it blows air into your mouth, like positive pressure. Push the lever toward your lips and it will give the reg some backpressure, requiring you to suck more to keep the flow of gas coming. The lever's effect is much more pronounced at 100 feet than at 10 because the gas is much more dense due to compression at depth. Common sense tells us that you'd want the lever all the way AWAY from your lips to provide an almost "power" breath (like the reg is breathing FOR you), but too much and the reg will freeflow just from normal breathing... Right in your mouth.

Think of the knob as an adjustment of how hard you have to suck to get the flow of gas to start, and think of the lever as an adjustment of how hard you have to suck to keep the flow of gas coming. Ultimately, you want them both as sensitive as possible, but you'll have to tune them down a bit to keep the regulator from freeflowing too easily and/or wasting breathing gas.

Most experienced divers "detune" their regs quite a bit... That is, they adjust them so that they don't get gas unless they suck purposely. They do this to prevent freeflow issues. Most beginning divers enjoy an easier-breathing, more sensitive regulator. With the lever and knob, you can choose whatever is more comfortable for you.

For what it's worth, these adjustments usually loosen somewhat as the regulator ages... That is, you may find yourself tightening things up progressively over many dives. I've also found that conditions tend to have a factor in these adjustments - gas density (air/"nitrox" vs. trimix), relative depth, and water temperature all have an effect on the adjustments, albeit only slightly. Consequently, feel free to adjust these "on the fly" and often to enhance your scuba experience.

Hope that helps. :)

What SeaJay said. Also, when adjusting the knob it's best to slightly press on the purge. This keeps the seat from being cut. Also, when storing the reg be sure the knob is backed all the way out=less pressure on the seat. You will be happy with the regs.

Warranty------keep your receipt. I talked to Boss Hog about this and he'll get to it as far as being able to register online. 2nd stage serial #'s are under the mouthpiece.

I started to keep a record of every HOG and Edge reg I sell when business picked up and they started going all over the world, literally. I record the serial numbers before they are shipped and match them with the buyer. My scuba pro reg required me to register it. Never did. So when it sold the little card and registration stuff went with it for the new owner to do. The Oceanics I have also had a card for me to send in. I never understood why the shop did not keep a file on the computer with three or four columns. Buyer, date, serial number, price. Could add a service due or performed as well with a date. Took less than five minutes to set up and helps me keep track of things. This way if the buyer does lose his receipt or throws it away it's no problem. I have the record for them or another dealer if they take it to them for service. Just a small thing but based on some recent comments by others who got dropped from programs by other mfg's cause their records were screwed up could have saved a lot of grief.

folks, there are no unauthorized dealers that I am aware of. I am not gonna screw anybody, no matter where they get it. Just hang onto your receipt...if I ever ask.
I am working on a online registration process but more for any issues and marketing reasons than warranty validation.

Must say the more reports I read about your regs together with how you conduct business is beginning to make consider buying a set or your regs. Cheers.

Usually Im all about instant gratification but I reckon I can wait:wink:. Pleased business is doing so well. I remember a thread a while ago where there was a discussion around the 2nd stage getting water in through the exhaust valve when head turned in some directions, I remember you posting that that you were going to address the issue and a slightly altered second stage to address this issue was to be released, did this happen? Cheers

I just thought I would put my foot in the door in a manner of speaking. My wife bought my first HOG 2nd stage and she lost the receipt (I think partly because she didn't want me to see that she was tardy in buying if for Valentines day) so If I ever (doubtfully) need to do warranty stuff I noted it here. LOL
