We had a ball with Aldora . . . Quality op.

In answer to the question of why take an "Intro to Tech" class, instead of going straight to Tech -- there are a number of skills you can easily learn that make it possible to take a better tech class with less stress. Having an instructor help you configure your doubles and get them properly weighted for balance can shortcut the learning process a LOT (and the answers are counterintuitive to many people). Being introduced to the ideas of positioning, line awareness, and basic drills, and going off and practicing them on your own before attempting a technical class, can make the tech class more efficient (as time doesn't have to be spent on these issues) and effective (because it can be focused on the actual skills and issues that are germane to technical diving). Expecting someone to come into a tech class with the skills of the average recreational diver, and be able to transform into a competent technical diver in four or five days, is more than optimistic.

Oh, and I haven't taken an Intro to Tech class, but I'm aware of the content and duration of two in our area, NAUI and UTD, and yes, they are similar to Fundamentals.

Mossman, this anti DIR attitude is so....2000s.....It's like doing disco in the 90s .Get with the times man. It's 2011 now.

Sorry, but I feel that's sort of sick. You've received criticism for daring to question DIR by daring to engage me. If that's not cultist, I don't know what is. If I merely bashed PADI and you wanted to talk to me about it, would you get the same sort of criticism? What are they trying to hide?

I fully support your right to talk with anyone here and would never criticize your doing so. After all, I didn't say anything too negative after you decided to dive with Aldora, even though I definitely disagree with your choice :)

If you and everyone else want to believe I have no idea about GUE and DIR just because I haven't taken one of their classes, that's OK too. Incredibly wrong, but that's OK. You don't even have to thank me that I convinced JJ to change the original waiver for the class you took, because I obviously don't know what I'm talking about.

I agree with him, but I wasn't going to post, and be annoying. ;)

Well, presumably you would be respectful and not mocking, and would be willing to have an actual adult-like back-and-forth discussion. If that's the case, I doubt anyone would think you were annoying. :)

Good to hear! Several divers whom I know and respect have used them, and I'm hearing nothing but raves. In fact, the ONLY negative I heard about them was Mossman's incident, and that occurred a decade ago. Just the fact that the owner was willing to spend that much time talking to just another diver at the show, giving me almost an hour of his time answering every one of my questions in detail (even the silly ones ;)) says a lot about their attitude towards serving their customers. I'm very excited, and can't wait to get down there! I leave next Friday...

And (getting back to the actual topic of this thread :D) tonight I meet with my instructor, Steve Millington, for my 1:1 refresher. I hope that, plus the dives we're doing on Saturday and all the practice that I'm going to get in while I'm in Coz, will get me to the point where I, too, can pass Fundies, like our OP Crush. I'm still impressed that he managed to do it on the first pass. Because it's still kicking my ass!

Great to hear! I have to say that just getting in the water and having fun while remaining mindful of what I was taught did far more wonders for my diving skills than any repetitive practicing ever could have done. Let us know how your trip goes.
