I have a Galileo Sol and use the Smart Trak program from UWATEC. One can customize it in ways that are very useful. I love that it allows me to insert notes in the dive profile too.
I back up the log to a separate storage drive weekly but also still keep my paper log too (especially good role modeling for students).
Keeping both updated takes a bit of time but for me it is well work the effort.

The program allows for extensive notes which I can refer to for future dives or if a student has a question about a particular dive we did.

Ditto! Same here. I like having 2 copies of it somewhere. Case in hand, one of my logbooks got soaked on a dive boat when someone I was diving with didn't fully close the dry bag. Soaked to the point of no recovery. Bought a new book and transferred everything back into it from the Oceanic software log. Saved the day for sure!

I don't download my computer, but I do keep my log book in a gallon size Zip-lock bag, and keep that inside my dry bag.

I download my computer because it remembers the dives I have done for weeks . . . which I often have trouble doing! I used to be meticulous about logging after each dive, but that has long gone by the wayside. When I download the computer, I get a list, and if I can't remember what a dive was, I can go through other sources (e-mail, Peter's log, etc.) and figure it out.

I also really liked the ability to search on a specific site, or a specific kind of dive, to figure out how many times I have done it, or to look up what my weighting was. I do a lot of travel and dive different configurations in different places, and sometimes it's difficult to remember which undergarment, which tanks and what weight I was using.

How does downloading to your computer tell you how much weight you had or what underware you were wearing???:idk:

I use the Suunto for when i bother to download (not often).

The SDM 3 software is poor, very badly written, buggy, awful GUI and unintuitive but it does the job for when i want to show someone a profile

(SDM 1 was far better)

Yeah, I agree, it may not be the best software in the world, but it's free. :)
For the things I care about, it works perfectly fine. It will download the actual dive profile and give time and water temp as well as depth info. It has fields to enter location, dive boat, buddy, weighting, equipment, and notes. It will calculate SAC rate if you input start and ending pressures of your tank. However, I haven't figured out how to use the SAC rate calculation portion if you are breathing multiple bottles. If you use it in computer mode, the software will also indicate gas loading in theoretical model compartments. I actually think that it does a pretty good job considering it's free, although you do have to pay $120 for the download cable for your computer.

I just use my paper logs and I love them.

Diving Log 5 <This program.

It's awesome and also has an iPhone app you can get so you can sync them with each other and then I have my log (plus scans of my cert card, site info including GPS coordinates, stats, etc) with me all the time.

Also they offer very good support and have always responded quickly to any issues I have had.

For the folks that use software, how do you handle it when you are asked to verify your dive experience by showing a dive log?

(I have never been asked to show a dive log but somebody would somewhere especially when they advertise that a certain dive needs certain experience).

My favorite logging app is Sensus Manager, which is freely downloadable on the Reefnet.ca website. It's simple and works nicely with my Sensus Ultra device.

I've been thinking about trying that device but never got around to it.

Ive never been asked. Worst case they could scroll through the dives still in my computer. If that didn't work id just walk to a centre less retarded and dive with them.
