Hello All, Diving in Coz on Jan 3rd. would really like to do Devils Throat with a good shop. Any recomendations? Having trouble finding a shop that will say "Yes" we are going there. Any Help Appreciated

If you are just going to Cozumel for the day, it is unlikely you will find a shop who will take you there. Usually, you have to dive with them for several days before they will take you. If you are going in on a cruise ship (which it sounds like you are since you are only there for one day), chances are, you will not find a shop who will take you. They haven't had time to assess your skills in the water.

It could be an issue unless the shop knows you well enough. You do come out at about 125' or so.
That being said, I've been there a couple of times with Pelagic Ventures. A nice dive, and the only issue we had was one of our group had his inflator fitting break at the bladder leaving him with a dangling oral inflator. Pretty much a non event though, ....an experienced diver with good bouyancy skill, a good dive buddy and they just dealt with it.

And you are very, very unlikely to find a shop that will tell you "yes" to Devils throat for numerous reasons:
  1. It's way too far out to plan that. Most dive shops plan dives each day based on divers on the boat, etc. - so guaranteeing a specific dive on a specific day almost 3 months out is just not going to happen - not to mention we can't predict weather/conditions that far out
  2. You're only here for one day, so you will be up against others on the boat who have been or will be diving for several days with that op - they also get a vote in where the boat goes - and believe it or not, many Cozumel divers don't even want to dive Devil's throat if they've already done it - it is FAR, FAR from the best dive here
  3. This is considered an advanced dive. It's deep and it involves some overhead environment situations with tight spaces. No reputable operation will (should) take you there without knowing you, regardless of what c-card you hold. Even our regular divers who have dove the throat many times don't do this as their first dive of the trip.
  4. If anyone does guarantee you this dive on your one day stop, without knowing you as a diver - I woulld RUN, not walk away from that shop - it's obvious that they are more interested in the $$ than your safety

My advice is to book your dives with a shop that is a good match for your style of diving and that can accommodate your cruise schedule. Trust them to take you on the best dive possible for that day based on all of the variables they have to account for on any given day - and ENJOY - there's really not a bad dive in Cozumel!

Have fun!

As above, especially the part about there being so many better sites to visit while in Coz. Of all the sites I've dove in Coz Devil's Throat is right at the bottom of the list to re visit, so if I were on the same boat you ended up on I'd be lobbying for ANY other site.

I think I saw a post a while back from a cruiser who said Aldora took him there w/o having dived with them before. Would suggest you contact them.

Yeah, I think so. I guess it can be done. Weather is still a factor to be determined of course, and January is touchy.

I hope to not do the Throat again. Don't care for swim thrus at all really. There are better dives in the Cenotes for that.

Thanks for the feedback guys and the concern for my safety. I do have the know how and the experience for this dive just one of those things I wanted to do, and say "been there done that".
Maybe another time.

I think the posts had more to do with the standard operating procedures of most dive operators. They evaluate your abilities and cooperation with requests usually before taking anyone there. It would help if your profile included number of dives as that shows up on your posts, but if one takes time to look at your profile - there's more to the story. If your inquiries to operators includes "Master Underwater Criminal Investigator, NoX, DM, IANTD Inst" then you'll probly get more help. Still, there is a boat load of divers to consider.

besides all that, the big "payoff" for 'the throat' the cross formation doesn't exist anymore from what I've heard. Don't know I haven't been there since Wilma...it is by far my least favorite dive on Coz. I never got the big thrill of it...but then again I've been to much deeper depths on scuba when I was younger, and staying above 80' is much more enjoyable to me nowdays.

If I only had one day to dive there, bottom time would be my priority, not depth. There is a similar verticle swim thru at the beginning of Bricks if you just have to swim thru a tight verticle space and you can dive one of the best sites on the island to boot.
