In this long thread, way too long perhaps, many of the pundits offer their opinions on this and that, how much reserve to have, what mix, diving solo, deco profiles, etc.

Since there have been so many posts, many by the same folks-myself included, what we all really want to know is what happened, the sequence of events, any medical or equipment issues, what can be learned here. The diver is gone, RIP. If there is such a thing as an afterlife I would think the hovering soul is saying WTF.

The same reason your card is supposed to get checked when you buy dive gear and get air fills.

I've only been diving two years, but I have, not once, been asked for my c-card to get an air fill. Not once, and I have dove in florida, hawai'i, the gulf, the midwest.

As far as gear goes, they will sell dive gear to ANYBODY. Want a regulator? No problem, pay the money, it's yours.

It's not a firearm...

Mmmm imagine if Atomic Aquatics made hand guns! Mmmmm...

Anyway, kitchen knives kill more people each year, but you don't need a cert to buy one of those either.

Besides, if some non-certified consumer wants to buy me a bunch of dive gear for my birthday, I don't want ANYTHING standing in their way :D

I know what you mean. We'd all like to know that. When (if) such information ever becomes available, it will be posted here. In the meantime, there's alot of useful discussion being generated.

Exactly ... it sounds like a gas management plan that was not thought out.

A lot more people are diving solo then they think. Particularly photogs. Multiple people on the liveaboard trips I've done end up hanging back or getting caught up in taking shots. I know they're coming back with like 100 PSI because I saw thier gauges. These are people that aren't carrying anything but the same tank I have. If you're way over there and we can barely see you or around the corner of the reef down current from anyone else, you are diving solo. Besides being miles from the chamber...
