John I don't think you need a flame suit. You make valid points as does Mike (and occasionally so do I). I disagree with you when you say snobbish. I believe the lack of interest in diving from charters is an industry wide problem in our region. If you dive anywhere else where there is a strong charter industry students are taught and encouraged to be trained in open water. In our region we do the complete opposite and run straight to the quarry to certify our new divers. I find it extremely rewarding to take new divers down on the Sport and the strong to work on their skills. These divers are being taught from their first dive experience that they can and should be diving in the Great Lakes. After a few charters I will then encourage newly certified divers to consider diving all year by introducing them to the St. Clair River and then a quarry. The mentality for many in our region is that diving the wrecks or open water is a special occasion. That is silly. It would be great if the GLWC as a whole began promoting and encouraging more group trips to different areas on the Great Lakes. Your trip to Tobe was awesome. The video that came from the trip is monumental. Wouldn't it be great to see a series of those videos created every charter season with the GLWC taking over different ports. And again John, I think alot of this should fall on instructors shoulders. We need to encourage our students to be active in the sport. There are way too many instructors who are not willing to get out of the quarry and take their students out on real open water dives.

If each of the charter services wants to hook me and my posse up we will gladly dive, video and photograph each site and develop an advertizing campain for the great lakes to promote diving in the area. We need to make this happen very quickly as some of my posse is not getting any younger. RIGHT DENNY? I have a pretty talented group assembled from a still photographer and editor, a video specialist with excellent editing skills, the BoneCrusher will be shooting video in HD now, Denny shoots video on 5 of the 6 dives and my most excellent support and dive modeling crew. Everyone knows you need divers in the shot to make it interesting and realistic and of course me to haul the dive queens gear around, you know just in case. Besides I provide as much comedy relief as possible.

I don't think there's necessarily a lack of interest in diving charters but it's definitely not always that convenient. Personally, it's easier for me to dive on the spur of the moment and I don't want to drive 3 hours to get on a boat at 8:00 in the morning.

It is what it is - but maybe a more fruitful discussion would be, how can charters be made more available to more divers. I know the economic constraints on the operators can make it difficult.

I will mention one issue that I've seen since the early 80's and I'm not convinced that it's changed much yet: Someone on the boat is usually miffed that we're not diving a deeper wreck.

I agree it is not always convenient to catch an early morning charter. And yes sometimes they are blown out. That is why when we teach open water students we teach them the importance of contingency planning. If plan one fails, then what. Be it the river, a lake, a quarry, or a bar.

And yeah there is usually that bonehead (crusher) on the boat who complains that we cannot double dip the New York. Oh well. I try to show students a good time regardless of what we are diving on (an no I do not take open water students on the New York).

Hey now! :confused: Whats with that! One of my favorite wrecks now is the Strong! Bright, sunny, awesome wreck, 20ft of water, warm! Heck I enjoy my unlimitted bottom time with double 100's and deco stops at 5ft and 2ft on that wreck! :D Next time I say we double dip it and I'll just stay on the bottom for both dives. Come get me when the crew wants to leave! :cool2:

Seriously... Its just about getting out on the boat and diving something historic. (Although I am loving the dives on the Regina this year. There is SO much to explore inside the wreck! :eyebrow:)
 
I dont think I've Ever called a dive in the 3 yrs/292 dives I been diving.... , but I called one today....

We (Wolver an I) dove out of Port Sanilac off of Bruno's Great Lakes Diver this morning... left Toledo at 4am and when we arrived dockside it was 6:38am, and Windy...

You could see intermittent spray over the harbour walls and 2 of the very small crowd of adventurers decided to give it a pass... (the 2 that hadnt drove 2ana half hours to Get there)...

That left jus' Wolver an I with what amounted to a privately chartered boat as we were the only ones on it except for Capt. Tim and DM Kevin...

Where'd we wanna dive that day?... Northstar? New York? Col. Williams?...

We settled on the New York first as it was the deepest (120' back by the screws)...

Wind is really blowing we're getting some serious wave action (5-7')... get out to the GPS location but cant find the buoy, finally Wolver spots it... (thank God its Orange, Never woulda seen it if it were white with all that whitecap action going on out there)...

Wave action makes hooking the rope harder... multiple tries.... finally we get it and do out final gearing up... we're both diving wet, he's got a farmer john, an HP 130, and a 50cf pony; I have a &mm full with a 7mm shorty over it, an LP 121, and a 40cf pony...

looked like I was going to have a hard time clearing the ladder with my giant stride as the boat was heaving constantly and the ladder was all over the place, I did a giant-stride-fall to the left of the ladder and made final mask adjustments, mask back on face and now I gotta swim back to the boat as I've already drifted 10 yds or so... soon as I get back to the boat I drop, I see Kevin down about 25' or so waiting for us, we swim at about 25'-30' to the descent line... when I got to the descent line a Ton of the stress I'd been dealing with went away..., and I'd also burned about 500psi just getting to the line... down, down... down... 3 different computers, Wolver was using a 25 yr old dacor microbrain (one of the first computers that was wristmounted) and a digital watch as redundant bottom timer, I had a Nitek Duo and I'm not sure what Kevin had... Wolver's microbrain ran out of bottom time when mine said we still had 5 minutes... we turned the dive not quite a minute later... max depth 114' , 47 degrees, 22 min. bottom time. I was back on the boat with a lil' over 1100 psi, Wolver about 1000psi.

did a two minute deepstop at 60'

the 3min safety at 20' was done between 15'-25' due to the wave action, but getting my fins off and then back up that ladder in these waves was very difficult and was nauseous for a bit after getting back on the boat... (Wolver a lil' more so :) ) ...

So I said "I'm Done" and scrapped the 2nd dive , Wolver was feeling much the same way and although Kevin was quite willing and suggested we see if the waves were lighter closer to shore (2nd dive was to be the Col. Williams)... the waves Were a lil' lighter closer but there will still some Big ones... my butt caught some airtime (a full second) when we hit a wave that was close to 10'.

I dont feel badly about it, I was feeling like crap and I'd gained alot of experience in that first dive, I was good to go.

I hope to go back about a month from now... hopefully with much smaller waves...

No... cus' I only called it for Me. The Capt. and DM were more than willing to head to the next site, and I told Wolver he and the DM could make the next dive if he wanted but I was OUT. He was feeling much like me at the time and called his Own dive as well.

I did slip 'im a couple bucks for gas tho'.... :)
 
Stash come back out. Bonecrusher stated it, we are having sooooo much fun on the regina this year. I remember a few years back I complained about going out there. A friend/dude who runs a charter called me an ass. Told me to open my eyes on some of these boats and really check out what is happening. Changed my experience forever. If there is an opening on the MLDA charter this sunday you should grab it.
