After you complete aow, rescue, five specialty dives and the 50 required dives - do you have to take an additional class for master scuba diver cert or is this just something you send all your info to padi with a check and you get it?

Reason I ask is if there is no additional training is the only point to have the "status"?

But you need the wall certificate suitable for framing and MSD backpack if offered! Don't forget the neat card AND the patch!!!

Take a Master Diver course through NAUI. They will recognize your PADI AOW/SRD certs, so you can go straight into MD. In NAUI you will have MD course materials, class time, and will have to carry out special dives in order to earn your MD cert.

I think with Naui it's an actual course, but with PADI, it's more like a 'degree' you apply for when you have met all the requirements (other certifications). There was recently a thread on the forum debating whether the PADI Master Scuba Diver certification is a worthwhile 'trophy' to encourage people to pursue more structured formal diving education, or as a tangible reward to mark accomplishment of completing the requirements, or a waste of money.

Richard.

So there is no additional training once you have competed the required tasks?

Nope.

It's just a badge. But you may be surprised how many people want to have that badge. A good friend of mine, despite us teasing him about it, was hell-bent on getting this "qualification" because in some deep recess in his mind he had decided it was some kind of a milestone that proved he was no longer a noob.

o...k....

He was also hell bent on becoming a DIR diver for the same reason... and a DM ... and got quite good at "walking the walk". But eventually the underlying problem caught up to him and he concluded (sorry... I *won't* tell you the details) that he wasn't meant to be a diver. He sold all of his gear, bought a bunch of camera equipment, hasn't dived in years and is much happier taking pictures of flowers and nude women. And he's still a good friend.

That's not to say that everyone who wants this qualification has a 5 alarm chaos in their brain but I personally find a drive to acquire "qualifications" for the sake of having them, a bit of a red-alert issue.

The worst is when I read on websites from instructors that they advertise themselves as "master scuba diver instructors". What the heck does that mean?

R..

Not sure I would care if someone had a master c-card, cause as they say the proof is in the pudding, and it would become obvious immediately once on the water who the master is.

I would go with NAUI though, for the extra learning.

Now I don't know what to do. I like diving and nekkid women!
