I've always wondered why people don't attach the gauge to their left wrist and run the hose down their arm.

Ok I've never tried that but my first thought was entanglement problems. If you've got a gauge on your wrist and a hose running up your arm couldn't entanglement be much more of a problem? (especially the gauge) Given it is attached to your wrist/arm, it might make moving your arm around a lot harder if it was to catch on something. Might be a silly thought, but just something I thought of.

The DIR guys probably went to bed early.
But it seems like an idea which should be explored.

A BP can be set up to any individual preference desired. It will only be Hogarthian however, if it conforms to that specification.

The only crtical "specification" in Hogarthian diving is simplicity.

I have left the Hogarthian fold though with my recent conversion to side mounting. I like the two SPGs right where I can see them. I think that Dive Rite's small SPG is the Bee's Knees in regards to weight. Small Hog SPGs are small and just a tad heavier.

I used to route my HP hose the other, down the side of the tanks, around the base of the wing and up and clipped off on the left shoulder d-ring, roughly the same area as yours would be.

It is easy to just glance at the SPG, for sure.

I ended up going to the shorter hose and clipped off on the left hip d-ring, basically with stage in addition to back mounted tanks it just gets a little confusing with two or three SPGs in the same area.

A number of rebreathers have SPGs routed in the way you are suggesting.

If you are diving independents, how would do the SPG on the right tank? I would have thought some symmetry would be beneficial.

I tried doing this once, I ended not liking it. Maybe with a miflex HP hose it would be okay. The regular HP hose is fairly stiff and bulky, I didn't find it comfortable next to the inflator at all. It would be a convenience to be able to just look to see the SPG, but I usually only check it a few times/dive anyway.

Thanks all for your replies so far.

Just to be fair, If I did the majority of my diving with the same team (or any team) and certain financial barriers weren't in the way I might very well go the DIR route. I wouldn't mind if they chipped in, especially some that may have taken part in the development phase of the gear configuration. Someone must have come up with it and may have done a pros/cons analysis that brought out some flaws (or not). I always appreciate honest criticism, especially when it's well thought out.

For ID's I would just route one down each shoulder. That is what actually got me to thinking more about it as one thing I don't like presently is the loops my SPG's make when clipped off to my chest D rings. Nor how they sit out a bit in front. The miflex idea is a good one - hadn't thought of that actually.

Hey Dale,
I know at least 3 very experienced divers and friends that route their SPG this way, if you make it up this way you will meet them.
I route mine under my arm but the placement is almost the same ( I would go down my inflator but my hose is a bit long) . I turn my head and there's my SPG. I also route my octo on a 5' hose my right shoulder and have loops holding the hose tight to my strap. the excess is bungied to my plate. It works and it hasnt killed me yet.

Essentially,William Main believed that if a piece of equipment isn’t needed, it’s a liability. The Hogarthian style try's to “eliminate the unnecessary while configuring the necessary in the most streamlined & consistent manner possible.” So while routing down the shoulder strap may work well on dives that don't require a stage or 2 clipped to the left chest "D" ring, once a couple of deco bottles are clipped off to the same "D" ring things can become congested, mistakes could be made. So for a consistent, streamlined & simple set up, the SPG is routed down the left side & clipped off to the left hip "D" ring.

No, thats not authoritative, its just my take on it.

I don't know about that. I've clipped off tanks and the bolts run down and to the left. The spg would be up and to the right. I also wonder what would be worse, managing the clips on the upper D ring where you can see then or on the hip where you cannot. I'm not even sure the spg needs to be clipped to the chest D ring. I can see it being routed beside the LP hose and secured with zip ties (or cave line if one prefers).

What's simpler. A spg routed beside an already existing hose that can be read without unclipping or adding a 30" hose down the left side of the body that needs to be unclipped in order to be read.
