Moving on to your next point - I eat fish, do you? The Japanese take hundreds of whales a year, not thousands. The annual quota for minke whales is 440. The estimate population of minke whales is estimated at well over half a million - some estimates put it closer to a million.
I am sure you can do the maths. 440/800,000 = 0.06%
I suggest there are far more pressing ecological concerns on the planet than this level of whale fishing.
Funnily enough, I don't think anyone gains IQ points by posting to a webforum. StevenN has a history of playing the man rather than the ball, and it is no surprise to see him back attacking me on this thread.
If he could stick to the issues rather than the people discussing the issues then everyone would have a far more productive conversation.
IMHO, if the Japanese were only taking Minke Whales, and only enough FOR RESEARCH, there would be a much smaller opposition.
Bringing you fish eating comment into the discussion kind of puts the hypocrisy of the Japanese stand into question; either this whale hunting is for food or it is as they "claim" for research?
440 whales, for research, can YOU do the math?
Does it really matter whether or not someone is from Japan, Norway, or the United States as long as we are independently thinking individuals unswayed by ulterior motives?
We are too busy looking at the little picture. We need to be discussing the bigger picture and the affects that overfishing and overwhaling have on our oceans and consequently us and life on this planet. Somewhere around 90% of our oceans apex predatory fish populations have been decimated. Whale and dolphin populations are also on rapid decline and if we don't do anything about it now before its too late then what?
Japan says their research is to see the population sizes and behaviors of whales in our oceans. How can you accurately get statistics on whale population sizes if you are killing and extracting them from the oceans and depleting populations as you are doing so?
Japans excuse is that its part of their culture. In interviews done on the streets of Japans major cities, residents were appalled at the actions that were going on once they were made aware of them, and said that the consumption of dolphin meat was in no way a part of their Japanese cultural heritage.
Unsustainable whaling (which in my opinion is what is happening now) needs to be stopped.
