Some people like to take out a paperback novel and as a page is finished, tear it off and pass it to a dive buddy or teammate.. once the last one has read it, let it go (it is biodegradable). Sheck Exley was known for doing this on deco stops after long cave penetrations (most of which were done on are BTW)

We did that with "Shogun." You've got to get the fastest readers at the head of the line.

what are some of the things you do to pass time at deco stops?
we all know 15 minutes of holding on to an anchor / drop line gets rather boring after about oh 30 seconds.

Try letting go of the rope and concentrating on just hanging there ... not moving any part of your body ... moderating your breathing to keep you at a constant depth. I can easily dig that feeling for 15 minutes.

Mostly I like to just hang out and relax. It's one of the few times I ever get to do that ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

How well does that work? Would you recommend it? Why?

It works. It plays music. The sound quality is good (for under water).

Recommend? I don't know really. I could go either way, and either just hang in silence. It's almost a question as to, if it's worth it to bring it on the dive or not. More often than not... I hang in silence.

They're also good to listen to while cleaning the hull on a boat.

I like to do what Diver0001 and NWGreatfulDiver do: relax the body and be weightless in a kind of meditation.

listen to music (its what i do), don't sleep, there have been reports that sleeping or napping slows down the circulitory system thus slowing the process nitrogen leaves the body (thats why you can't sleep in recompression chambers during treatment if you get bent), however if you can find a way that works for you (i know its possible) try eating, and keeping hydrated, during deco stops (like eat little fun sized snickers etc.. and drinking water from a sip type bottle, or gatoraide) its has been proven that keeping well nurished, and hydrated during deco helps the body elimniate nitrogen, and function like it should on land... and try reading magazines, or something (i think thats possible, but i have only heard of this...) I just listen to music, and play games, or watch a movie on my iPhone, or iPod touch, and that works perfectly for me......
