Ret-----I was addressing the poster before me..........I don't get the folks who hate the trip from CUN..........it's all part of the adventure and I personally quite enjoy it........although early CUN departures are problematic.........whatever you decide, have fun..........Betsy

I was totally agreeing with you. From looking around, seems bus and ferry works out to around 19-20 bucks each way. I can't understand how people look at a couple hour bus and ferry ride as a "hassle." I've traveled a lot and lived in a few foreign countries and for me, getting away from the maddening crowd and sampling the local flavor is part of the reason I travel.

For certain times of the year my only realistic option is to fly to Cancun. It's only a bit of a hassle when I get into Cancun at 1 am. I'm into Playa 2-ish and then sleep in the bus depot until the ferries start to run. When I arrive at a more civilized hour, I hit one of the local bars if I've got a ferry wait. It's really no big deal. But flying directly into Coz is sweet.

Not having to deal with dragging bags around and waiting hours for a bus/ferry is well worth the extra $$ to fly direct for us.

Another BIG factor in the decision is whether you can get a non stop into Cancun from where you are. Today I flew the other way on a non stop from Cancun to LA after the ferry and taxi route. While at the Cancun departure area it was announced by Continental that their flights were to be delayed several hours because of weather in Houston.

Now given that there usually many other flights out of Houston those passengers going there could probably make some sort of connection. But if the weather delay in Houston is on your outbound leg--then you are probably going to miss the very few Cozumel flights and spend the night in Houston or end up in Cancun anyway. Those weather delays happen all times of the year.

So, for me the choice is first determined by the possibility of a direct flight into Cancun rather than a plane change elsewhere. The taxi and ferry time is almost never more than the time to change planes. Then if there is the normal price reduction for Cancun it becomes a no brainer for me.

If you are flying from a locale that has no direct flights into Cancun then the decision becomes strictly an economic one, but safety should really not be a concern.

Just to throw it out, you'd be screwed if the harbor is closed the day of your return flight...

Ret - you were the one that posted the question so we are giving you are opinions. Don't ask the question if you are going to be critical of the responses. For me, it wasn't worth it because the difference in ticket price between CZM and CUN wasn't that much. With my two bags, waiting time, wanting to get to the island, etc., for me it wasn't worth it. I know a lot of people that do the route and have no problems with it. It's just a matter of preference.

About the only thing that stops the ferries is a hurricane. Normal Port closures from Nortes do not affect the big boats.

Our return flight was cancelled last Dec because of weather in the NYC area. We were already on our way to CUN so we didn't find out til we got to the airport. We ended up staying at the Courtyard Marriott. Rooms were good, hotel was pretty new and they have a free shuttle. Overall, very convenient. If I had an early flight I'd consider it for an overnight stay. Another option would be to stay in Puerto Morelos. It's just under a half hour to the airport from there if there's no traffic. If staying overnight in Puerto Morelos I'd go early in the day and make a whole day and evening of it.

Whenever I plan a dive trip to cozumel, I check fare to both airports & haven't found the savings. In fact, I just checked & the price is identical! I keep looking though because saving scuba$ is a real treat for me!:dork2:

Least we forget....$200.00 plane ticket vs $350.00 plane ticket :D
That's enough for me. I won't look at it for less than $100 difference, but for $150: Hola Cancun...!

I do prefer to fly into Coz if the money is similar, sure! Last time I had business in Cancun market area so it was a very long day, plus the ferries run when they want to and one canceled on my so I had a longer wait in PDC. Too, as much as I pack, I had to have a tricycle porter each way in PDC, but all part of the adventure in a way, worth it if you save enough, can't find a flight into Coz, have business on the peninsula, etc.

One plus for me was not having to pack in the sardine van at Coz airport/CZM.

And plan a return flight late enough in the day that you won't be overly challenged to get to Cacun/CUN. I can leave my Coz hotel at 9am to make the 12:20pm departure.

But for a CUN flight: To catch the NWA flight @ 1:40pm, I'd leave the hotel at 7am to allow for delays with ferry or bus; if I have to take a PDC taxi, the savings get smaller. No way I'd take the 7:55am NWA flight. Continental flights are even earlier in both waves, as are American's. Late afternoon flights would put me home later.

It varies, and there are more flights in/out of Cancun.
