Sorry Letterboy, posts were flying so fast, I missed this one of yours.
Yes, there is a small D ring at the very bottom of the plate. Tell me again what my options are for that D ring. Either a crotch strap or spool holder?
Thanks,
Mary
I don't know if this will be helpful, but I have a large Oceanic SMB that has about 20-25 feet of rope that winds up inside a pocket. The rope and the pocket were included with the SMB. Since I don't need to use an SMB that often, I decided reels or spools are somthing I just don't need to carry. The SMB I have has two clips on each side of the pocket. I attach one end to a bottom D-Ring and one end to one of that lanyards that attaches the inflatable portion of the BC to the tank plate. Keeps the SMB out of my way, keeps it from dragging and floating and I have access to it with no problem if I ever need it. Here is a pic of the set-up:
I did need it on the last dive on my last trip in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Even though our group was diving with a dive flag float, it was not tall enough for the boat to see through the chop and the distance. You know, the kind they use in Pompano and Fort Lauderdale where one person in the group has to dive attached to a rope with this thing on the surface the whole dive. It's only about 4-foot tall. They tell you, the one with the dive flag is never lost.
The idea is that the boat can watch all the dive groups at once throughout the entire day and of course, provide safety for divers in a heavy boat traffic area. We waited quite a while for the boat to find us because there were over 30 divers on the boat that day, and we were the next-to-last group, so we gave it some time after we surfaced. After a while, it was obvious that they must have picked-up everyone by that point. Then the boat was getting boat was further away and it got to the point where the only way to see it was to kick-up above the chop. Obviously, they didn't have a clue where we were. I decided that if we couldn't see the boat, they could not see us, so I deployed. The boat finally came - they said they could not see us until the SMB was deployed. I guess the morale of the story is, even if you are diving with a dive flag float, that doesn't mean that it is any more visible than you are from a distance. You still need that large SMB. I was the only one in the group of four that had one. Whew!
In a separate situtaion, I spent about five minutes winding up the rope on a spool that one diver had dropped. Seems like a hassle to me and if you are diving in situations where the need rarely comes up, I think the solution I have is more streamlined and tolerable. I just can't see Mary with a reel or spool hanging off her butt. Now, is there anyone out there who thinks Mary would be sexier with a reel or spool hanging off her butt and that's the real reason they would endorse that option? Tell us the truth now.
