Just a question, I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on if folks should have DAN insurance during their certification dives? Things happen right? I am not one to be pessimistic but if something should go wrong all my ducks would be lined up. Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Great question!

It can never hurt to have DAN just in case;-). Very little $ for a lot of assurance.

Would you insure a new car before or after you drove it home from the lot & your health is much more important ;-)?

Have fun in your cert class!!

Welcome to scuba diving!

During my OW class I was insured by Dan. My shop (Padi) either provided it or it was part of the class. I was told when i was in class the insurance was provided to me as a precaution if needed. I did not know what it was at the time and said Thank You for it and shrugged it off. Now i would say THANK YOU loud and proud. I recently send in my nominal fee for renewal and am quite pleased that i have the peice of mind knowing that i have some insurance while diving.

So check with you dive shop where you will be taking your instruction from and see if it is included in the price before you spend your money.

As Luckydays stated it was included in my PADI OW class from the shop. It started from day one when we jumped in the pool. I would check into it.

I got this in an email from DAN, of course I got it after we had completed our OW dives.

It's been a couple of weeks since you enrolled in DAN's Student Membership Program, and we're guessing you'll be preparing to complete the open water portion of your training some time within the next few weeks.

It's never too early to start planning, and while your instructor will work with you on the dive gear you'll need, we thought we'd send along a checklist to help you remember other items you should have with you.

No matter what the weather forecast, be sure to have:

* drinking water (and lots of it remember that staying hydrated is important)
* sunscreen (remember to reapply it often)
* hat/visor
* towel
* change of dry clothes
* warm clothes (if you're diving in a cooler location or prone to feeling cold)
* a snack or packed meal
* DAN Membership card?

There is no better way to celebrate the completion of your open water dives (and training!) than by going for your first dive as a certified diver. Remember though, your Student Membership is valid only through the completion of your last training dive; if you do a celebratory dive after class, you will not have dive accident insurance unless you upgrade your Membership and purchase dive accident insurance before you go.

Having your own DAN insurance is worthwhile.
During your OW course you will be covered under your Instructor's insurance. However, if you do your check-outs abroad and something health related crops up, the DAN will also cover you. So it's an added benefit all round.

We sign all our students up for DAN's student insurance as part of the required paperwork for class. If someone's a student with a shop that does not include the DAN paperwork as part of their class registration, the student diver can go to https://www.danismybuddy.com/Student/ and register for DAN student insurance on their own. Considering DAN student insurance is free to the student and has incentives for the instructors, I can't think of why any student would want to take a class (at least in the US) with someone who doesn't make it a point.

(Of course, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to see that having DAN insurance once you're certified is a good idea, too. If you're doing your certification dives in a vacation setting, get it before you go, of course.)

I echo what ClayJar has stated. I always sign my students up for DAN as part of their initial enrollment and encourage them to sign up for their own DAN membership once their student registration expires. I suppose it is a low risk venture for DAN since students remain relatively shallow during their OW dives and should be under the supervision of an Instructor during their training. In either event, is does make sense to sign up for it as a student diver since there are many benefits and few if any negatives associated with doing so.

Interesting - no one even mentioned DAN in our cert class that I recall- but it was in Indonesia.
