My experience agrees fully with those who talk of Cozumel as a very safe place. Perhaps some things are changing, but I thought I would pass on a story that typifies my past experiences.
We had a pretty large gathering of several families staying in a hotel north of town. One night we older ones headed to the hotel while the next generation, then in their early 20's, stayed in town to enjoy themselves. For reasons that I never fully understood, well after midnight my older son decided to walk back to the hotel alone. Once you get past the turnoff for the airport, it's a pretty dark and deserted road, and he had a good distance to travel. IMO, walking alone under those circumstances was not the smartest move he has ever made in his life, in any location in the world.
One of the most interesting characteristics of Cozumel is that the police presence is nearly invisible. You rarely see uniformed gunmen strolling the street, and you rarely see a police car. That was not the case this night. He told us that on four different occasions a police car came up to him, asked him if he was OK, and offered to drive him to the hotel. He declined each time. He felt, though, that that they were keeping an eye on him to make sure he was safe all the way home.
I will arrive tomorrow, and I have no concerns whatsoever.
