Please forgive me if this is allready in another thread or sticky somewhere. I just got my open water cert yesterday and am hot to trot to get some gear. I need advice specificly on first/second/octo and BCD. I live in florida, am a big guy (6'2" 250LB) and want the most user friendly and most importantly reliable stuff. There are a lot of Scubapro dealers in my area, but I don't see them for sale online. (I guess they are protecting their dealers and I'm fine with that) I am willing spend the extra money for the good stuff, but what is the good stuff? On the other hand, I will not be using this gear more than once a month at best. I don't need anything fancy, just reliable, confortable etc. With so much to choose from, can anyone point me in the right general direction.
PS for now, mostly shallow dives, warm water etc.
Thankx in advance.

Google Salvo Supply in Florida, and talk to Don. You can get a really nice Agir Brokk Backplate and wing system with the full harness for $650. I have an Agir Brokk rig, and I love it! For such things as computers, you can google scubatoys.com, as they almost always have the lowest prices!

Hope that helps,
Taylor

you cant go wrong with scubapro. i have a mk25 with g250v 2nd stage and i love it. it was a lil pricey, but you have to think.....you're buying life support equipment. would you trust your life of the 150 dollar reg you found on ebay? i wouldn't! as far as bcd's and cpu's go id go with a bp/w. i currently dont own one, but have dove with a few and and can say i wasted about 700 bux on the 2 different bcd's i own(which are for sale if you're interested lol). i love wrist mounted computers, uwatec, and suunto makes a few good ones that are and are not air integrated. in the end it all comes down to what you are comfortable in, so id say rent a few setups and see what you like before you drop the cash.

Why doesn't anyone recommend MARES ? I feel like the lonesome diver!! I dive the MR42 metal with MARES Icon back inflate BC and its great! now, that being said the only dive shop I have ever seen carry MARES is my LDS . whats the deal ? !

I own four sets of scubapro regs and they are bulletproof. I bought a set of MARES regs and I wish I would have spent the extra money on scubapro. There is no comparing the MARES Regs I bought with any of the Scubapro regs.

Bought a pair of Mares boots and they were trashed in 5 dives by a student.

A student bought a MARES wetsuit and the zipper broke (cheap plastic) before it even got wet.

They may sell some good equipment but I will never buy MARES again.

There you go SFBarry, somone commented on Mares! :D

I appreciate you guys taking the time to post your opinions for a one-post newbie. Renting a rigs few before taking the plunge is probably a good idea, but I have a funny feeling I'll own a rig before nightfall. I'll post how it works out.
Thankx again...

Since you are a big guy, and new, I would suggest a Zeagle Ranger B/C as your first. You can graduate to a BPW later.

In a perfect world, you would be buying a Deep Sea Supply BPW, but I have no idea if you are ready for that yet.

This makes no sense. Why recommend someone buying one brand to learn on and then spend more money to graduate into something else? Why would he not be ready for a bc? Other than making sure it is adjusted there is nothing special about a backplate.

Someone else here says they should get an instructor to teach them how to use a backplate. Maybe its just where I dive here in So Cal, but a large percentage of divers are in plates, and many of us mentor newer divers. Many of us know more about the gear than many instructors. There is even really good directions for getting it close in one pass here on the net.

"a backplate can make you go face down in the water" only if you over inflate an oversized wing, while having all your weight on your weight belt around your belly.

A jacket bc can keep you half out of the water and save your life in your unconscious
if you are unconscious, how are you going to inflate it? Sorry to tell you but even a life vest can still have you floating face down in the water. Any BC can have you face down.

The Mk2+ can go much deeper than 45 feet. Don't even worry about that, but as a new diver, I KNOW your going to keep it in recreational levels anyhow.

As far as gear goes, it is very hard to buy bad quality anymore. If you stick with major brands (stay away from the annual sale at Costco) you will be safe. I agree with whatever you buy, make sure you can have it serviced locally.

Mares: IMHO look pretty cool, absolute crap quality and customer service. I needed parts for a customers reg, and there was a 2-3 month lead time for the parts (and normal parts not a freak breakage) I ordered a bunch of parts, they shipped what they had, charged me shipping, got more parts in 2 days later, shipped and charged for that, and a few weeks later shipped more parts. I damn near paid more for shipping than I did for parts! And who the hell names a reg ICE because of the color but not have it designed for cold water with a name like that!?!

Mares is like Oceanic, fairly inexpensive, and functional down to about 50 ft.

For anything deeper, I would not go with these brands. But they are great to learn on, and also good for a cache of rental gear.

Don't try this on your own based on a bunch of bozos on the internet.

Some things in life are priceless.

For the OP...nereas's village is missing him.
