Some of the free-est democracies on earth no longer allow vocal dissent from certain ideas, regardless of how illogical or dangerous those ideas may be.

unfortunately, they didn't take advantage of oliver wendell holmes, jr. as a point of light for guidance in how to adjudicate matters of free speech. who knows, maybe someday holmes will be utilized more in the balance of free speech v. dangerous speech by these other democracies. however, it should be pointed out that even holmes placed limits on free speech--especially with regard to dangerous speech (e.g., shouting "fire" in a full theater).

but at least it's good to see that there are other people, such as yourself, in support of free speech. i just find it odd that as a proponent of free speech, you would also want to suppress the expression of speech by those whose views differ from yours (e.g., captains who think that bananas aboard ship will cause bad luck). after all, proponents of free speech (especially those who do look to holmes for guidance in this area) tend to accept the marketplace of ideas theory, which posits that the truth will out (i.e., intelligent people will not accept false ideas).

I think you've created your own strawman argument here.

How did you give me the position that I want to suppress speech of people who disagree with me? There's no basis for that interpretation in anything I've written. At what point did I say that the captain should be prevented by law from arguing that banana's are bad luck? Or even not by law? The captain is free to argue whatever he likes. I am not required to respect or practice his beliefs though. And I am free to argue that they're silly.

That's sort of a random point you made. Could you please quote the portion of text that you think implies I am for suppression of someone's speech? Maybe I just don't see it.

This topic looks like it may be in competition with I'd like to see a tank explode.
Covered. Please read threads before. :silly:

BTW, while it's Friday afternoon in the States, it's Saturday morning here. I'll be jumping on a dive boat in about an hour. I'll bring a banana to see what they say.

I don't know where you are, but I do think the superstition is more common in the states or western hemisphere.

More relevantly: If the captain did object, would you respect that...?
