OK, I got the skinny on the cable gate across the tramway leading to Buford from Paul Hanson, the FWC officer who left his card while I was diving. He says that under no circumstances are you to drive around the gate and down the tramway. If you are caught, not only is a fine involved, you will be charged with misdemenor trespassing as long as a search of your vehicle turns up nothing that shouldn't be there. If you have something in your vehicle that shouldn't be there, eg.: firearms out of hunting season, alcohol, drugs, or fish that you aren't licensed to catch, etc., you will be charged with felony trespassing and probably have your vehicle impounded. They are pretty serious about enforcing it and it would really suck if a few scofflaws ruined it for everyone by getting it shut down. Just goes to show that you shouldn't listen to just anyone to get the facts. The diver I talked to remarked that they (FWC) didn't mind if you just drove back to drop your gear, then drove out again to park outside the gate. He said he wasn't going to walk all that way to dive. If you're going to dive it, do us all a favor and get a cart or wagon to make the trip.
