Catherine,

Not to pick on you, but to correct a misconception. Other sports/hobbies are every bit as critical of idiots in their presence. When in Texas, and trying to convince my wife to let me try skydiving, I hung out with quite a few skydivers. They would constantly rant about idiots who chose to jump without taking such a simple precaution such as jumping without a reserve because it saved them $1000. Hmmmm, $1000 for a great life insurance policy, Hmmmmmm. Not a hard decision to make. They already spent $3-5K+ for their main and pack. They also ranted about all types of other "stupid" risks that people took for no other reason but ego.

Another perfect example is when I was doing big wall climbing in California. We constantly ranted about fools who would take risks by climbing unroped on 3000ft walls or even small 30-50ft climbs. We had 2-3 "Pros" die each year by falling doing things like this. It wasn't that it costs a lot to have a rope and some gear, but ego. You would have "pros" die on simple 30-50ft climbs that they had done hundreds if not thousands of times roped up. Heck, they could do the climbs in their sleep. What did them in is not the things within their control but simply holds breaking off, or slipping off a hold that was wet, but they couldn't see it because of the type of rock.

The reason for these rants is because these people can greatly influence newcomers in a sport and when somebody like these two fools diving that deep on air for no other reason but their ego angers many of us not so much that they do it, I for one could really care less who goes out and tries to kill themselves doing whatever they choose to do. It angers me because they advertise their stupidity not thinking of the fact they might end up getting somebody else killed because they see it done and figure "hey, can't be too hard if these guys are doing it with no special equipment or gasses".

Well, my rants about heart attacks are at least empirically correct.

It is an urban myth that all these irresponsible thrill seekers are dying. That is not who is dying....but most divers really think that is *beside the point*.

Besides, if I want to crawl under the grate, that is really my right because it is still a free country. A lot of the divers you *like* were crawling in there long before tech diving was putting money in their pockets or you were on Oahu. Hope you know this is not personal, am just pointing out the truth.

See, everybody draws the line someplace different. Yesterday, I told JB I was NOT riding on this little narrow beautiful road, because every 20 minutes or so, some nut case came flying around blind curves and might take me out. He said ".....yea, maybe", (like so what?). So we had a little stand off, and ultimately, I did not want the risk for the benefit and we chose a wider, straighter road. I am sure he thought I was being a wuss.

I just don't think you should decide for others who can go under the grate and who can't, who can dive in an unhealthy state, who can paddle solo to Molakai, who can ride a monster wave....

I am really just pondering what makes the dive community "different" not insulting anyone.

The only other course the thread can take is everybody just posting that the guy is an idiot and deserves to die ...and we really do not know that.

PS: Dumpster, you are a dying breed.

Anyone that has gone through proper scuba training knows that diving gets exponential more dangerous the deeper you go. Posting a video with no disclaimer showing a couple of guys in what amounts to rec gear diving to 300 feet sets a very dangerous example. Its the kind of example that can lead someone with a weekend open water cert to try it out of ignorance.

Yes, people use to dive worse gear then that to the same depths years ago but not to long ago tech diving was extremely dangerous. From 1960 to 1967 there were 109 deaths in the caves of Florida. How many cave divers do you think there were then? How many deaths do you think we have had in Florida caves from 2000 to present? Proportionally how many more cave divers do think they are in the same period? Why do you think theres been a proportional reduction in deaths? Maybe it has to do with people adopting safer dive practices and then calling out people that insisted on diving like its 1965?

Yes guys with this kind of attitude are a dying breed and thank god!

Personally I don't give a damn how much danger someone puts themselves in, risk assessment is up to the individual. But you cant honestly say that posting a video like that with no caveat or disclaimer sets a good example for people that don't know better?

People who do know better should jump all over this and point out how dangerous it is. Please don't try to chalk this up to some boys will be boys attitude and try and glorify these guys as some sort of dying breed that should be respected and revered. They should be denounced and rejected (been following politics way to much) :dork2:

You usually do a good job keeping us local tech guys head from growing to big but this one we should all loudly reject.

So divers who watch that video will think about doing that dive themselves? I think you folks should give a little credit to other divers. If someone is stupid enough to try that after just seeing a video, even without a disclaimer, they deserve what they get. Just because it's on the internet does not mean others are dumb enough to do the same thing. Remember, most divers except for the old timers have gone through training and should understand that this is beyond being safe.

Worse than that, a Dutch PADI instructor at Alona Beach told his 3 OW students just a few weeks ago that he had dived to 80 metres on air. When I mentioned about the dangers Ox Tox and Narcosis he said that as he was young and could handle his drink he thought he was okay. Later I took him aside and said that if he dived to 80 metres with a buddy that was his business, but that he was irresponsible to tell his students that he had done so. His answer was a dismissive "Okay". Now I've seen this U tube video, I can see where he gets his ideas from. Perhaps he should do a search for "diving accidents" on U tube. The result of the top hit is chilling.

Now that, Age, is different. Inexcusable for an instructor to be advertising something like that. Did they report him? Again though, he should know the dangers and if he chooses to do that himself, that's one thing but bragging to students just shows his inexperience. Even if he was just BSing, it's wrong. I'd be asking him for his instructor's card to write down his number.

They were three young female divers. I spoke to the Irish diver and she had already figured out that he was a w*nk*er. The other two were much younger and impressionable. As far as I could tell, they thought he was cool. Nobody has reported him and I thought about doing so. Much better to drag his name though Scuba Board. Alona Beach Philippines is a small place and they all know who I'm talking about.

I live in the Philippines and was in Alona a few weeks ago after diving on Cabilao. Give me a hint, what shop? :D
Okay then, but bear in mind that their regular instructor had a reverse block and they bought someone in. Genesis.

Good point, JB says the same about crotch rocket riders who do wheelies in traffic and "give him a bad name" He is very serious when he says it too.

Maybe my problem is that I have an affinity for idiots for some reason? Oh..yea, like my parents, lol. I feel protective of idiots. My mother was flying single engine Cessnas solo with only me, when she was 8 months pregnant, who would do that? No wonder my thinking is messed up, I'm damaged.

Still, I think I have some practical points about the best thing you can do for your dive safety is work out regularly...number one, no doubt about it.

Dennis, you are as nosey as I am, BTW. And, I really want to know if you have ever once used that pony you bought? Or did you just skip right into tech diving? You better hope that there are not pictures of you floating around on the internet lugging your "double" around manually, Palauan style.

It wasn't that it costs a lot to have a rope and some gear, but ego.
EGO? I cannot think of any other reason people would climb cliffs, in the first place, or jump out of a plane, for that matter. You are sort of describing two types of people: ones that want to *live* and ones who don't want to *die* and they are both doing things with slightly different technique, doesn't that strike you as funny?

and truly expose the stroke fest going on.
