I've experienced the corrupt cop scenario in Cozumel once. I've also walked and driven through many of the neighborhoods off the beaten path in Cozumel with out incident. Sure there is corruption and crime there, but honestly I don't think that it's any worse in Cozumel than it is in a large US city.

lol... Ugly Canadians :) It's just not true and the words don't even sound good together.

I've wheeled my infant/toddler daughter up and down, up and down, up and down the streets of San Miguel in a buggie with my wife in tow and have never felt insecure unless around the cruise ship piers with other "ugly tourists".... something I wouldn't be as likely to do in many parts of Houston. :O

Coz is a safe place with good people. Being a long time visitor (without incident) and a frequent reader of travel news and boards, you can count on someone regularly trying to paint it in a negative light. You have to realize that the island only exits because of tourism. Locals know that bad press will ruin their only livelihood. Collectively, they do their best to make it a safe place that people feel comfortable to bring their families and spend money. However, there are always bad apples and apparently, they're been dealt with just like in this isolated incident.

I’m not sure where all this is going, but DivingPrincess is right. The term “American” refers to the people from the United States, not just anyone from the American continent.

Ugh, there are 2 American ContinentS! BTW... who are you to say who's right and who's wrong? Did anyone ask? More specifically, ask you? There is no American Citizenship.

Going back to how to avoid such a problem as the original story...

Four people in a car with a cooler of beer? Was there a desiginated driver who was not going to touch a beer? If not, bad plan - anywhere. Yeah, I've done it many times, but would not in another country. :11: Certainly not in Mexico or further south.

Just too close to the edge there...

No but there is citizenship to the United States of AMERICA

Can this thread be closed? Please? It's nothing more than stupid bickering at this point.

Well you can blame that on the one who threw out the term "ugly American" I will defend my fellow "Americans" (from the United States) anytime, anyplace.

I'm sure if I had used the phrase "Ugly Mexicans" or "Ugly Arabs" I would have gotten kicked off this board altogether. Yet nothing happens to the person that disparages the U.S...yeah, that's fair.

If you are pulled over, for any reason, and feel it is an un-just stop. Simply tell them you have no money on you and request to go to the police station and handle the business.

When I had my accident in Cozumel the Federales (black uniforms) were not involved, but of course the other 2 divisions of the local police were. the traffic division (brown?) and the tourist police (blue) someone correct me if I’ve got them backwards. All were very courteous and professional.

I also met the Cheif of Police, a former military officer, who was also very courteous and after seeing that we had been there ALL DAY getting the paperwork worked out, jumped some butt and got us out of there and back to enjoying our vacation.

I was told that the traffic police as rule may not speak English, but the tourist police do, and that the tourist police’s job is to be a liaison for you between the other divisions. This was told to me by the American Consulate, when I called her for advice in my situation.

Remember also that she, or he if there is a new one, is also there to help American citizens if you have an issue while abroad.
