Even non-legends have that happen to us. That's why I prefer to lurk when I have time and, if I have anything I think I can contribute, will usually respond to the poster via PM. I like to think of myself as controversy-adverse...

Welcome to SB. I'm not sure I would classify you as a non-legend. Those of us who have read Shadow Divers and are fascinated with wreck diving know you well by name and that you have contributed a lot.

But you're right, the nature of online forums and electronic media means everything you say is on record forever and you could be held to account one day. Many people don't care... now.

I hate to imagine what it's going to be like in 20 years as all the naive teens now posting their youthful escapades on myspace and youtube start to become prominent members in society.

Hey...didn't you drop the Mossman's video camera diving the Brittanic?

Aloha Mr. Yurga,
I see this is Post #1 so, Aloha to the board.
Obviously you’re free to not post publicly and I think I understand, this thread LOL is a good example of what to fear. (edit) I think I've oopsed here...I think I was thinking of the Chatterton and Tonka thing going on... But you did notice the preponderance of ‘accountability’ issues were not well distributed didn’t you?
I encourage you to post in the forums. I’m eager to hear what you have to say, your thoughts, opinions and experiences.

Well John,

Now I can welcome you in PUBLIC! You are INDEED a legend, and I only left you out of my list since you hadn't gone public here. I take privacy quite seriously.

Welcome to Scubaboard John. I hope to actually meet you at your NESS seminar in Feb.

Thanks for all the nice welcomes! I apologize for not wanting to post openly in the past; I lived (barely) through the flame wars of the early and mid-1990's and was reluctant to be drawn in to that type of situation again. However, I think the moderators on this board do an excellent job of keeping things on track while still allowing enough of an edge to keep the conversations interesting. I can tell you, it's not a job you could pay me to do...

I will try posting out in the open from now on if I think I can make a point. This is very infrequent; given the huge number of people on this board of varying backgrounds, I find that most of the points I think of when reading the original post have already been made, and more eloquently than I could have done. I also read perspectives which I would never have thought of, which is what makes these boards so interesting.

I will also try to keep my sense of humor somewhat in check, as I have been told my sarcasm is sometimes so subtle as to be undetectable, which usually results in my getting beat up...
