Huh? I have been using a watch for decades and many divers I know also use a watch as a very practical means of timing a dive. Not everybody uses a computer and when they zonk out you still need a watch and a depth guage and tables if your deco.

N

I was under the impression that back in the day before dive computers, EVERYBODY dove with a SPG and a watch. That was how it was done....right?

It's hard to find a dive watch for less than $500 that meets the specs I'm looking for.

I had actually settled for this Swiss Army. It had everything I wanted except for the auto winding.

My list of wants.

-At least 200 Meter depth rating
-Sapphire crystal
-Auto winding
-Screw in crown and back
-Orange face
-Stainless steel bracelet and case
-Biggest luminos dots I can find. I want to REALLY be able to read this watch in the dark.

I looked at the Orange Monster and one other watch from Seiko (SKA367) and they were cheaper than the Swiss Army but didn't have several of the specs on my list.

I'm really still looking and that's why I posted here. You guy's have way more experience than I.
Sounds like you really want a DOXA 300 (or the new 5000 reproduction). Xmas is coming, treat yourself, it's more fun than a scooter, and far easier to show off in the bar.:D

Depth gauge and watch. SPGs were optional.

Most of the time I run a dive plan on V-Planner and put it on my wrist slate and use my computers as bottom timers.

When I got certified in 1985 computers were pretty rare and very expensive and everyone used depth gauge, watch and tables. Since I've started diving I think the ubiquitous use of dive computers is really the only thing that has changed in scuba. All the other equipment really hasn't changed all that significantly.

Well, hmm, you have computers--plural--which you use only as bottom timers and a V planner where I use the Navy Tables, a watch and decades of diving experience. Why bother with a computer(s) to only use the bottomtimer function, man, just get a watch--:D

Yes, it was a 25th wedding anniversery gift.

As to SPGs they go back to about 1962 I think. I do remember a few around the late 60s and in fact, they may go back to 1958. Not sure but I do know by 66 you could get an SPG because I have one. I will have to consult my USD catalogs. The Sportsways SeaVue I believe was first.

I was fortunate to get a DOXA (as a present) back when they were $250.00 and SPGs were just coming into use.

But then you could buy a VW bug back then for about $1,500, a new house for $18,000 and an AC Cobra for $5,500.
