Who knew that pollution, global warming and SCTLD could all be cured by banning pointers. Brilliant!

It makes people feel better and that they are doing something for the environment, even when it means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Like in some places, spearfishing on Scuba is banned when the local marine life is decimated by commercial fishing using the most aggressive types of fishing equipment, dynamite fishing, pollution, trawlers, etc.

I always carry one with me. Mine also serves as a rattle (noisemaker) unit which has proven quite useful attracting attention of guide or fellow divers when needed.
The downside is that it has no magnet cap and can make occasional noise when clipped to my wing rings in currents, that's why I hold the noisemaker part in my left hand and keep it secure with a wrist strap. Sometimes I get to tuck it in my sleeve.

Very useful item for fine balance when taking photos, and clearly not a tool to poke marine life or corals with.

That's because divers are the ones who notice these issues. Where there are no or few divers, problems get worse and worse without anyone noticing. Usually, divers are the best thing to protect the environment. It is better with divers than without them.
