I do exactly that, I have a finger spool that I bring in addition to the reel when I plan a wreck penetration.

To that second part: Ok.. a large loop on the end of the reel line that I can pass the reel through rather than a clip makes sense. I suppose the loop gets hooked to the bolt snap that clips the reel to the D ring?

But you list me with adding an extra small loop to untie it. Please elaborate.
the big loop has a tiny loop at the very end. it functions as a sort of pull tab so when you want to undo your line that's wrapped around something you can just pull on it

I'm going to try this on dry land

a snorkel (you may choose not to carry one but on most recreational dive charters it's required).

Edit: Please ignore the following negative rant. It was a misguided and incorrect assumption on my part.

Seriously? I have never heard, seen or experienced any such "snorkel requirement" on any dive boat or liveaboard in any of the numerous countries or islands I have dived. Moreover, I haven't worn (or carried) a snorkel since I was a wide-eyed newbie. Have you actually been approached with a snorkel prerequisite? If you are you just making sh!t up again like the "solo diver redundant equipment requirement", please stop doing that. You talked about diving in Florida and I can guarantee if a dive guide (on any of the ten plus different dive boats I have been on down there) tried to enforce a snorkel requirement they would be laughed off the boat.

He’s making things up again. There is a PADI training requirement for snorkel; IE it’s required gear for class.

Requirement in Queensland, the state in which the GBR is located. Can sometimes get away with it rolled up in a thigh pocket, but rarely on cattle boats in my experience.

Thanks! This is news to me. I stand corrected.

This has been another idocsteve production.

Thanks for playing.
Obviously! There was a definitive post by LI-er I read a couple of years ago that clearly revealed his identity. Other incarcerations are Slate, BedHog, Londy, Caruso, IT (my personal favorite), and many, many, many others. 😀
