Sure you would, especially with that attitude.
@tursiops. No one that knows me would say I have an attitude, especially when it comes to security. However, when a cruise ship security officer interjects a personal, illogical, and ridiculous opinion on what constitutes a weapon, I am polite, don’t get obnoxious, but I do insist on discussing the matter with their chief of security. I have had a few such discussions in 18 years of cruising, and have yet to have any object confiscated.

Good luck. As someone else said recently, the security guys DO hold all the cards.

They do if you are violating a written/published rule, policy or procedure. They don’t if they just pulled an absurd opinion out of their ass!

Multiple trips on RCI to the Caribbean. No problems at all with tools, cutters, wrenches, drivers, keys, picks. They don't even look sideways at my dive knife, and it's a full size AquaLung model.

Most cruise lines have a written policy about prohibited items. Having a printed version of the list may be helpful when discussing an item with security. Be aware that some have the blanket disclaimer like RCCL does "Some items that are not specifically on the list may be prohibited if they are deemed questionable by the Staff Captain and Security Officer."

Here is an update on my experience with Celebrity. TLDR -- I was not allowed to have my hex keys on board. As a compromise, they let me have my tools when I disembarked at the next port but I had to return the pouch when I returned. The staff (security, Guest Services, etc.) were all very courteous and professional but were very insistent that I could not keep my tools with me on board. I jokingly asked if they were worried I would take apart their ship. They laughed and said yeah, something like that.

Getting my tools back after the trip was easy. All confiscated items could be found after customs near the street side. Security checked my ID, asked me to sign the release and gave me back my pouch.

Good thing I didn't bring my scuba knife, o ring pick set, etc.

I just completed a 7-day Caribbean voyage. Security, during embarkation, found my tool pouch which contained a set of hex keys (for setting up the arms on my camera), a very small Swiss Army knife, a Philips screwdriver. They were ok with my Swiss army knife (very short blade) but not to my tools (specifically my hex keys).

I gently (in a non-confrontational manner) showed them the Celebrity prohibited list (see Preparing for Your Cruise FAQs | Celebrity Cruises) which didn't mention tools. They showed me their security list which said no toolboxes, no power tools. I again gently said that I didn't have a toolbox or power tools. They then said they were sorry but no tools.

Being a frequent traveler for work, I knew that I should not press it. So I asked if I could assemble my camera housing at a security scanning table. They allowed that. They also said that Guest Services on board **may** allow me access to my tools.

On board, I needed to adjust the housing and arms more so I called Guest Services. They were also very courteous but insistent that I couldn't get my tools. I asked if I could adjust the camera in front of them at Guest Services under their supervision. They said no again. As a compromise, they said they could give me back my tools pouch when I disembark for my dive trip but I had to (and they were very emphatic) return them when I reboarded.

Did you carry the tools on or were they in checked luggage? I found out a lomg time ago that stuff you cant carry on will usually go through checked luggage.

Sounds like they were being difficult for no reason.

It was in my carry on. My bad. I wondered if it would have gone through in my checked in. My friend checked in non-lithium batteries. His checked in bag was pulled for inspection which caused it to miss the flight. Luckily he had a day before his liveaboard.
