I was in "full cave gear" before I took Cavern. And I took Intro and Cave 1 in the same equipment.

Full cave gear after cavern. I don't think I even knew single cylinder was an option. I don't think I knew not having a canister light was not an option either, but apparently it is with some agencies.

Heather and I did cavern in single tanks and short hoses... immediatly went to a 7' hose after class.... Have now spent a year as cavern divers with aprox 75 cavern dives. Just bought our side mount gear and canister lights for at least 6 more months of cavern dives in sidemount before we take Intro.

From cavern to apprentice (so far) in full cave gear. It was an easy transition from wreck diving.

No reason whatsoever not to.

In my mind if you have to ask that question then you already know the activity isn't for you. It's like fishing for an excuse to do something half assed.

My wife and I took Intro/Basic together. I had backmount doubles. She did a single tank with H-valves since she wasn't interested in walking around in doubles and knew perfectly well she wouldn't be advancing to full cave or technical diving in the foreseeable future.

Actually, until the moment I started getting my gear together for the next day's class, she hadn't planned to take it at all-- she was just there doing some fun diving with me before my class started. As a result of her last-minute decision, we were able to share that experience together, and to do a little cave diving together in Mexico later that year. Plus, there's now a door open for more in the future.

All arguments against single tank with an H-valve aside, this was the best possible route in my opinion and I wouldn't have had it any other way. I don't consider the single tank to be a serious safety compromise for the type of diving she'll be doing, particularly since she'll always have at least one buddy with her in a set of doubles. The silly thing in this case would have been to invest a lot of effort and expense into forcing a configuration on her that would spoil her enjoyment, and probably ruin any chance of us cave diving together at all over the long haul.

I put my vote in on her behalf in honor of the non-addicts that fit her profile and don't know scubaboard exists :)

As I understand it (consider the source) Some people went doubles, but maybe not the Can light and all all the cutting instruments, reels, and such.

It seems to me taht if you are going into a cave, whether as a student or a certified diver, you should be properly equipped. My instructor quite rightfully required it.

Jax, I'm with Lynne (no surprise) and Kathy -- started diving doubles long before I took Cavern/Intro (took them together) and had taken Fundies before taking Cavern/Intro. Since my intention was to go on to Full Cave it never occurred to be to not be in "full cave gear" from the beginning.

I took my cave classes in Mexico -- double 80s.

"Funny" anecdote -- Lynne and I took TDI Intro in doubles in Mexico and a few months later were in N. Florida at Ginny. After paying the $ to get in, we started setting up and the guard came by and said "You guys are Intro divers, you can't dive doubles." Larry Green was setting up at the table next to us and so he was asked, "Can those guys dive doubles as Intro divers?" He asked us who trained us and then said, "Yep." We were OKd to dive doubles in Ginny otherwise we would have had to bail.

WHOA!!! Guys, I am not arguing FOR or AGAINST agency Requirements!!

The heated discussion in the 58cf thread, re: singles allowed for Cavern and Intro, made me curious.

No one has changed nor does there seem to be a desire to make changes to the current requirements. I figured (SWAG'd) that the community and instructors do a good enough job of convincing the students to get into full cave gear.

It seems my SWAG is correct - Those that took cavern in singles are few, and had specific reasons to not upgrade their equipment at that moment in time.

I.e., the current system works well.

As for me . . . check out the sidemount thread.

That Intro thing -- so do I have to get a special card to dive Intro dives in doubles? :shocked2:

Or can I show my sidemount card?

What's this "Cavern" thing you speak of? And why would I have taken it before my Cave 1 class?

No equlivant in GUE land. You go straight to Cave 1 <Which is not considered Full cave by Ginnie, FYI> I believe it covers basic line handling in OW and in the cavern zone, gas planning which is Done in Fundies, and not sure what else.

Im just planning to do Cave 1 after Tech 1, and use 30/30

I don't see any reason why you would need mix for a Cave 1 class.
