I lost a $400 computer on a kayak mishap once (locally).
I went to Australia and paid about $300 in 2000 for three very short dives out on the GBR with an airborne boat ride (big swells - full throttle) and a bunch of extremely rude Japanese tourists who sucked through their Aluminum 63’s almost before I got in the water.
For the small glimpse I got of the reef it seemed kind of steep for what I had to endure and how far I had to go.
I’ve lost numerous knives and stupid things before I finally learned some good DIY methods of securing gear.
Other than that, all the super economical and enjoyable local shore dives I’ve done have more than made up for it.
