I lost a $400 computer on a kayak mishap once (locally).

I went to Australia and paid about $300 in 2000 for three very short dives out on the GBR with an airborne boat ride (big swells - full throttle) and a bunch of extremely rude Japanese tourists who sucked through their Aluminum 63’s almost before I got in the water.
For the small glimpse I got of the reef it seemed kind of steep for what I had to endure and how far I had to go.

I’ve lost numerous knives and stupid things before I finally learned some good DIY methods of securing gear.

Other than that, all the super economical and enjoyable local shore dives I’ve done have more than made up for it.

Would you really want that many certs from one dive?

No not really, but it would be nice to be able to upgrade from helitrox to normoxic without redoing the entire course again.

It cost me a wedding in New York and a honeymoon in Hawaii for my very very first dive. And I’m still married close to 25 years with 2 kids close to college age, so I’m still paying it off.

Trip to Antarctica for 6 dives....cost included flights, accommodations, boat, and a lot of really interesting touring....but cost/dive was maybe $800.
Even more expensive was a trip to the USS Monitor....travel, accommodations, weather allowed only two dives on the Monitor plus trimix....maybe $1200/dive.
But for just expensive diving, I'll take the guided cave dives with Brian Kakuk on Abaco hands down. Even including flying and accommodations, the dives are extraordinary and absolutely worth the daily rate, especially if you can share with a buddy. Done that trip three times, but have no desire to go back to Antarctica or the USS Monitor.

Either the one where my wife fell in love with diving or my last one where we were ran over by a freighter losing the boat, all gear and a business.
Both are seriously big ticket, one was worth the price of admission.

!!!WHAT!!!
Please elaborate on the freighter!
