I went out today to help a novice diver. He turned up with a full jacket BC; a console with depth gauge, spg and compass in it, with no way to clip it off. An octopus with a funky clip holder that wouldn't hold it for more than a couple of minutes. An integrated weight system that put way too much weight in the wrong place. Visually, he drove me crazy. Functionally, he drove me crazy. I gave him a gentle talk about streamlining, and about keeping his gauges and octo out of the sand and where he could actually use them. Then I spent a half hour trying to help him get neutral and horizontal in the water, and was never successful.

I think I've been brainwashed. I realized today that, with the exception of my husband, who has adopted some of the DIR ideas, it's been a LONG time since I've gone diving with anybody who wasn't more or less DIR. You get spoiled.

It's interesting how your posts have evolved since you started diving, (and posting your observations on SB). It's hard dealing with real fresh divers when you've moved on, yes?

I couldn't help noticing that your first line indicated you "went out today to help a novice diver." Well, hopefully you did!

Sea ya!

Lynne,

Just imagine what he thought of you in your gear. ;)

"The poor lady had to dive with a metal plate on her back, she was all wrapped up in hose, and her fins must have been 30 years old." :14:

I'm not DIR but I do dive with them on a regular basis and they don't seem to have a problem with diving with me. Perhaps you might have worded your last line a bit differently, saying you have been spoiled diving with good divers, not just DIR divers. I don't think you are trying to be inflamatory but there are those who will.

Don't do DIR wouldn't know how if it bit me so can't laugh. However, re console find that if I unbuckle the BC stuff the hose for the SPG etc between the cumberbun and the buckle and do it back up it pretty much prevents it from dangling and you can still get to it pretty easily. On the octo front if the clip doesn't work (and most rental clips don't) most BCs will allow you to put a loop in the hose and stuff the loop up into the BC along the shoulder harness. Have never had one come loose from here, it doesn't dangle and is right where you (I) want it. (All this learned from using many different styles of rental gear.)

When purchasing gear I went with the BP/W and clip my spg and octo to Drings with brass hooks and breakaway clips, but lots of people use BCs so it doesn't hurt to know how to make them work.

There is a difference though.... DIR is a system. While there are some other good divers out there... It's totally different when you dive with a DIR team. The system isn't complete if you are not in standardized gear with the same mindset.

A tell tale sign of a fascist regime ;) Glad to hear that you could offer some assistance.

So the DIR system, in your opinion, is totally different then the way we others dive? What happens, as in this case, if all the divers are not DIR, or you are on holiday and your buddy is not DIR?
