I was reading around, putting off my homework as usual, and saw a site talking about filling tanks. I didn't care much for the tank filling aspect, but noticed it said they were capable of filling yoke or the "increasingly popular DIN valve".

I was under the impression that DINs were older and going/gone out of style. If they're a new thing and I'm just misinformed, what advantages do they have over "standard" K valves?

I was surprised to see this hadn't been discussed, so maybe I just did a poor job of searching for it. If it's already out there I apologize.

DIN isn't really older... it's just a different format. It's more common in Europe, etc, but is very popular in the US with 'tech divers' as it allows higher pressure fills from HP steel tanks.

The advatages are a stronger connection for higher pressures. You see them mostly on tanks for filling over 3442psi.

You can also get a "convertible DIN" tank. It includes a screw in yoke insert so that you can use it with yoke regulators.

It's been discussed here, but not a big deal to ask again.

It also traps the O-Ring much better than a yoke so you have less chance of air loss do to a O-Ring blowing.

Thanks for the answers, and especially for the links miketsp. I searched Yoke vs DIN but didn't turn it up, that's exactly what I was looking for, thanks again!

sometimes the search engine on here basically,....ummmm .... sucks..

but it's still a great board.

I agree... the Search function really sucks.

May I have a question too?

I get my DIN 1st stage and is trying to find a DIN to Yoke adaptor now,
the cost of the adaptor is from $25 to $70 does it make a difference?
Also the brand name adaptors can rarely be found locally, like some of my friend suggest AL or Bcht because it's shorter, but no LDS carry those around. My fear is that even if I can find one, in the future, do I still need to find parts like 0-rings for replacement, or it doesn't need any maintenance?

Any suggestion?
How about online? How did you guys buy and take care the maintenance?

0 rings should be easy to find for anything. Go to you local ACE Hardware, they should have compatable 0-rings.

I would always use DIN over Yoke. It is a much more secure fitting, allows me to use higher pressure fills and when diving in an overhead environment e.g. wreck, then you dont have to worry all that much if you knock the adapter! In addition, I always found the DIN to suit the traveling diver. This is because a lot of the tanks used with dive centres etc are generally druised and battered and I have on numerous occasions found that my yoke adapted regs do not fit snuggley. DIN always!!
