I'm proud of my YMCA training for what it meant, and what you learned. My card was earned in 1989 (open water - though I still believe it was far beyond then AOW cards of many agencies today) With the end of the Y program, have you changed affiliation? Who? How?

I took Open Water 2 through a YMCA Instructor in Pensacola, Fl.
I have changed agencies, to T.D.I.
If I ever go back to the states, I'll hook up with the same instructor who is now S.E.I., or another highly squared away former YMCA instructor. ;)

I got my open water with the YMCA in 1987. I got my advanced open water in 1988 both with YMCA. Still have it I will not change. I am proud of the boot camp type training I went under. We had to throw our gear in the pool assemble it and put it on then swim to the top. Yes we even did our regs that way. But I don't remember any reg. failure maybe we just had an old pair for this exercise.
I will agree it went far beyond any agency and I feel better for it.

YMCA Basic OW 1976 followed by PADI, NAUI, and NSSCDS.

There was no "Basic Open Water" in 1976. The Name "Open Water" was coined in 1979 or 1980 by PADI and was not used by other agencies for several years after that.

I was first certified as a "Scuba Diver" in the YMCA program in 1973. I became a YMCA instructor in 1978. I added a PADI instructor certification in 1979 and crossed over to SDI/TDI in the 90's.

1972- My card just says SCUBA DIVER

You are correct Capt, it says Scuba Diver.

I did my first three classes (OW, AOW, SLAM) through the YMCA in 2001 ... simply because I used to go to the Y for basketball and noticed a "Learn to Dive" sign one evening at just the right time. My (then) wife bought me lessons for my 49th birthday.

Looking back on my initial OW class, I think the YMCA did a very thorough job ... spending a lot of time on skin diving skills and in-water comfort which I think are important components of scuba diving. However, I also think they got a bit "stuck in time" in some respects ... and that some of what I learned didn't really translate well into the equipment or mindset that I adopted as I moved forward. For example, there was almost no mention of dive computers or nitrox ... and while they taught the dolphin kick (which I almost never use) there wasn't even an introduction to the frog kick (which I use all the time) ... in fact, the book we were using stated that the frog kick was primarily for swimmers and had limited use in scuba diving.

But overall, I'm very happy with the quality of education I received through the YSCUBA program.

Afterward I got involved in a dive shop that taught NAUI classes, and did my Master Diver, DM and Instructor classes through them. I've pretty much stuck with NAUI ever since, although I have also taken classes with other agencies ... SDI/TDI, IANTD, GUE, and NSS-CDS. With the exception of the GUE-Fundamentals class, I chose the instructor rather than the agency.

At the time I got certified, I was so unaware of agencies that when a co-worker asked me if I was taking the class with PADI I said "No, I'm taking the class with Loren (my instructor's name) ...

Mine too, 1970

I was a mossback Y instructor. Matter of fact I still keep my Y instructor trainer card in my billfold with my CMAS, NAUI and SEI instructor/trainer cards....Even though the YMCA will always be on my list because of the way they let the program go, the quality of the divers the program produced is something to be proud of....
