Eon firmware 4.0 dated Dec 19, 2024, includes the Buhlmann GF 16 algorithm for the Core models. This was previously only available on the Steels.

I’ve just updated mine with Suunto link; it took about 20 minutes and the choice is now in my menu. I’m about to select it, restart and see what further choices it gives.

At a minimum it will stop (well probably only reduce) comments on this forum about closed algorithm and lockouts.

Update: after setting to Buhlmann and restart the “Personal” setting for conservative/agressive is gone and replaced with Gradient Factors defaulting to 30/70

Will it still lock you out if you’re running Buhlmann?
It will never lock me out in either algorithm since I will never skip a required deco stop. And if I did because of some emergency I’d probably take a few days off anyway.

However, in Buhlmann it will never lock anyone out.

I personally don’t think that’s a good criteria for picking an algorithm. I don’t believe any studies have been done on how well any algorithm works diving after skipped deco stops.

Yeah, when the computer is set to 60/75, and I'm cold & surfGF says 80%, I'm glad the Shearwater is on my wrist. That's close enough for me and warming up will improve off-gassing. ETA: cross posted & I now see no lockout in Buhlmann. Cool.

That default GF is only about 15 yrs behind the research. Nice to see they're improving.

@Landau, thanks for sharing. Did they by chance implement surfGF? If not, then maybe that's a Valentine's Day gift. 🙂

Did they by chance implement surfGF?
As far as I can tell no. It looks like the IOS app hasn’t caught up with the new firmware yet so I can’t get into customize my display setttings.

They did post a new v4 manual even though the link to it still says v3.

Hi @Landau

Thanks for the update. The new manual does not contain much information on the Buhlmann algorithm. The default is 30/70, it looks like changes are custom without other presets, is that correct? Are the custom changes full range, 99 or 100%? Let us know when you determine if it has SurfGF

The Suunto app just decided to update or possibly just recognize that my core was updated.

I was able to get into the customization screen, but didn’t see an option to display Surf GF

From the manual ver.4.0 :
4.6.2. Warning: Ceiling broken

This section describes what happens if you break the decompression ceiling when diving Buhlmann 16 GF algorithm.

Bühlmann 16 GF algorithm does not have the same algorithm lock as the one in Suunto Fused™ RGBM 2 algorithm. If you dive with Bühlmann 16 GF algorithm, your device will continue showing the original dive plan even if the decompression stop is violated. Approve the Ceiling broken warning by pushing the middle button.

Logs
If ceiling is broken during your dive, it will be visible in your dive logs. When you check the dive in numeric view, Ceiling broken is shown as a header of the log. If you dive again after ceiling was broken, the new dive log has the header Ceiling broken in previous dive.

Dive planner
If ceiling is broken during your dive, it will be visible in the Dive planner. A pop-up message appears on the screen, saying Prior Ceiling Broken violation will affect planner accuracy. The message disappears after three seconds or it can be removed by pushing the middle button. After the message disappears, the planner can be used as usual.
This is a great XMas and New Years Gift! Thanks Sunnto! I already love the great lightweight form factor with its large easy to use buttons and big screen, and now this is a nice lil bonus! :yeahbaby:

Very cool. Looks like they've also added trimix and fixed setpoint CCR mode... Very very cool.

Thanks OP for the heads up
