I have just recently become certified and I am starting to purchase my own gear. I am still trying out different BCs when we go diving to figure out exactly what we want. I already have my mask, snorkel, boots, fins and wetsuit. I am not in the market for a dive computer. I am thinking I would like a wrist computer so I can use in while we are on trips, renting equipment and when I have my own. I am looking for something that will work now while I am just starting out but will also be something I will continue to use. I am looking for something for under $600 so any advice you can give will help me out.

I don't understand, do you mean that you're looking for a wrist mount dive computer rather than one that is attached to the HP hose?

Correct. I am looking for one I can use with rental gear and then when I get my own.

You can get a suunto vyper that will do air/nitrox for around $400. If you can swing about 700 bucks you could get a scubapro galileo luna. It's got a nice big display and can later be upgraded to do hoseless air integration, calculate trimix, and a few other things.

If you can stand used equipment, that bevaersdivers guy has a used galileo sol (next better model above luna) with a transmitter for about 600 bucks here Used Computers

I dive the galileo luna myself and like it a lot. Screen is big, easy to read in decent light. There are better displays out there (oled, high end LED) but not in your price range I don't believe.
