Probably. There's nothing impressive here, I've just been around awhile. Keep breathing and keep diving the numbers keep getting bigger, it's nothing special. It happens to us all.

In my opinion, the fact that Walter really does feel this way, is one of the many reasons that he is such a good example to all divers and respected by everyone who knows him.

Walter, if you can give me some dimensions I think we may have the materials here around the house. My hubby keeps things like
extra leftover PVC, and the marbles would not be a problem. I will be going with a class in mid-March to Ginnie for their OW check out dives and would like to have one then. Thanks

Cindy,

Get the smallest PVC that the marbles can roll freely in. Cut it to fit your hand comfortably with caps on either end. Glue a cap on one end, drop in about 3 marbles. Glue on the other cap.

Walter - you indicated there would be some leeway for sharing reels. Since they are a significant investment, can we get some idea of how many of us currently own them, or plan to buy them before our trip? I'm not quite sure how to do this.

Also, would it be acceptable for a buddy pair to share a reel?

And I think someone asked, but I don't think there was an answer, how much should they cost?

How long a line should they hold?

What weight line should they be loaded with?

(I realize the last 2 are somewhat inter-related.)

BTW, I'm THRILLED to be attending a cert course with such an experienced and MODEST instructor!

Happy Diving,
Scuba-sass :)

Are the bearings they use in CV Joints. They are quite large and have great impact. Go to one of those CV joint repair places and see if they won't give you a bunch.

As for reals... here is my favorite

or this tiny one...

I also own one of these and use it for my Diver's Down float/flag. I am not sure that "plastic" is such a good idea, but they are "cheap".

Maybe Walter can look at these and tell us if they are "OK" or not. What say teach?

a method of securing the reel and a method of cliping the line off quickly
This is more of a tip on reel usage rather than discussing the trip, but since folks might be purchasing their first reels, I thought I would share it here....

Rather than using a bolt snap clip to tie off my line, I have a loop tied at the end of my line with a bowline knot. The loop is large enough to fit the entire reel through the loop. And I have a little plastic ball off of a girl's pony tail hair tie to keep the line from completely winding back onto the reel.

When I need to tie off, I pull the line out around the tie-off object, drop my reel through the loop, go one more time around the object, and then continue the dive, unreeling the line out behind me.

My job is many things, one being to keep the price of this trip down.
Getting a count on how many reels we will have out there to use is a good idea. I want people to not have to go out and buy a reel for this trip, if there is enough to use.
Sounds like Mike will have one, Pete, Walter, Dee? Who else already has one, and how many does each person have. I know Walter told me he has more then one. Especially, the people flying in, I don't want you to have to bring one, unless Walter says it's 100% necessary.
Also, please welcome SwampRat to the trip. He will be sharing a room with Bob. Go to room 777 to harass them both!

Depending on how much line is needed, Beast and I will probably have an extra reel.

Would you look at that. Haven't spent a dollar yet and already have a roommate and a room number. Who says you cant get something for nothing. :D
I was planning on purchasing one of the ReefScuba Reels. Also the slate, what size is required. Like my Ex use to say "Size does Matter." ;-0 OOps that's more then 99.99% of the population needs to know. I have the little forearm mount slate will that work?

If anyone already has a reel, they should bring it. If you're planning to buy one anyway, go ahead. If a reel isn't in you budget at this time, we'll work it out. I agree with Natasha, we want to keep costs down where we can. If the slate works for you, it's fine for the class. For what we'll be doing, a small reel is fine. We are not planning major penetrations. Mike, that method of securing the line works perfectly well. If anyone wants to go that way, but can't tie a bowline, we'll teach that skill Friday evening. They are extremely easy to master. If I missed any questions, I'll reread the thread tonight when I have more time and address them all.
