Required will be: Mask, snorkel, fins, SCUBA cylinder, valve, BC, LPI, regulator with 2 second stages, SPG, weight system, timing device, depth gauge, light, reel, signaling device, knife or shears and slate.

Nice but not required: Compass, computer and pony bottle or doubles.

Walter: Can all required equipment be rented at the dive shop?
Also, can you explain the use of the reel? I was asked this question over the phone and want to be sure I gave the right answer.

By signal device are you referring to a safety device for surface or an underwater signal device ie, tank banger or safety sausage?

I have both a whistle on my BC and a safety sausage. I have used a tank banger on my tank at times so I wanted to clarify that.
 
an excited student showed her "waterproof" whistle. As we went through our pool exercises, she was quite dismayed that it would not work under water... too funny!

I carry a safety suasage, "waterproof" whistle, and a rattler to get the attention of others.
